Sul Ross-Rio Grande College Announces New Degree

By Laura Nelson

Sul Ross State University-Rio Grande College announces the addition of a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) to its slate of degrees, and starting in the upcoming fall semester, busy adults can begin working towards a baccalaureate degree with an Organizational Leadership emphasis or a Child Development emphasis.

The new degree provides a convenient path to a four-year degree for those who have a technical or vocational educational background. Students who have significant, relevant work experience may also qualify to earn credit using a recognized assessment process and the student support specialists listed at the end of this article can provide more information.

The organizational leadership component prepares students for effective management in non-profit, profit, civic or religious organizations. The practical coursework includes, among others, leadership and project development, professional communication, managing human resources, and understanding budget and revenue.

The child development emphasis qualifies graduates to obtain positions in fields that require a degree in child development. It meets the degree requirements for Head Start and other child care agencies. Students who already hold an Associate’s of Applied Science in Child Development from Southwest Texas Junior College already meet all requirements to be admitted to the program.

Dr. Paul Sorrels, Associate Provost/Dean at Sul Ross-RGC, said, “We are very excited to offer what we believe will be a very accessible and affordable bachelor degree option.  We hope this will help a number of people achieve their educational goals.”
