Fernando Quiz Five-Time Favorite Faculty Member
By Laura Nelson
Sul Ross-Rio Grande College students choose one outstanding faculty member every year and recently named Dr. Fernando Quiz “Favorite Faculty” for the 2012-2013 school year, his fifth such designation in his 13-year tenure at RGC.
Quiz, a member of the education department faculty, said, “The award means I’m doing something right. I help students achieve their academic goals and I understand where they’re coming from.” He likes to tell students ‘If I can do it, you can do it,’ a credible statement by someone who is a first generation college graduate.
His parents recognized the need for education and stressed that to their children. Quiz followed in his older sister’s footsteps and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos where he also met and married Miriam. After spending several years working around south Texas in food service, Quiz decided to switch careers. He taught in a middle school in Houston and then went to the Sharyland school district in rural Mission, Texas before moving back to his hometown in Del Rio.
When the Kellogg Foundation offered the couple fellowships, Fernando and Miriam once again relocated, this time to Las Cruces, N.M., to complete doctorates at New Mexico State University. They returned to Del Rio, began teaching at RGC in the fall of 2000, and have been a part of Sul Ross-Rio Grande College since then.
Dr. Quiz also serves on the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees and advises the Sul Ross-RGC Future Educator’s Club. He particularly enjoys overseeing graduate research and teaching his bilingual classes. Congratulations to this hardworking, devoted professor for being honored by his students!
