Esmeralda Rosalia Avalos aspired to be a teacher and although she was denied that opportunity, her family helps Sul Ross-Rio Grande College students pursuing that same dream.
Esmi, a native of Uvalde, suffered from a debilitating, chronic illness that began when she was a young child. Despite her health issues, she completed high school, but was unable to attend college. Her desire to help others led her to volunteer at New Beginnings Adult Day Care until she passed away on May 27, 2013. The Avalos family decided to honor Esmi and celebrate her life by giving a scholarship to a deserving teacher candidate.
Gabriela Chavarria of Del Rio is the spring 2014 recipient of the scholarship and she and her mother Rosa recently met with the Avalos family in Uvalde. Gabby plans to teach mathematics at the high school level and also hopes to earn a master’s degree so she can teach at the college level.
Dr. Dorman Moore, Department Chair and Professor of Education at RGC said, “This is another opportunity for us to give financial aid to deserving education students and we welcome that.” The scholarship will be available in the fall of 2014 to students seeking a bachelor’s or a master’s degree.
Esmi’s dream of becoming a teacher lives on through the generosity of the Avalos family that helps other students achieve that dream.
