Surveys at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area

The Center has conducted two intensive surveys in the Texas Panhandle at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area since September 1999. These surveys, initiated before several prescribed burns were performed in the recreation area, resulted in approximately 1,600 acres being surveyed.

A total of 34 sites were recorded during the two projects-both projects included site reassessments after the burns. Baseline data relative to the affects of fire on cultural resources were gathered through these before and after visits, allowing park managers a better understanding of the relationship between fires set under prescribed circumstances and archeological sites that are burned during these endeavors.
