Information Literacy Program

Program Essentials

Information literate individuals are knowledgeable participants who understand information retrieval so well that they are able to apply the concepts regardless of the tools used, whether to satisfy their immediate information need or in the future. They are able to identify and formulate their information need, access needed information, evaluate and effectively utilize the information - all competencies that will contribute to their future citizenship, worklife, and lifelong learning.

Program Overview:

The mission of the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Information Literacy Program is to produce information literate individuals at Sul Ross State University.

In order to promote information literacy among its students, faculty, and staff, the Sul Ross Library offers a systematic, integrated approach to information literacy based on standards outlined by the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL). We seek to work directly with individual instructors to design instruction tailored to the needs of each class, but also offer more general types of instruction that may be scheduled as needed.

Library Tours

An overview of the building's layout, holdings, and services, without any in-depth instruction. (Approximately 20 minutes)

Course-Related Instruction

Librarians offer instructional sessions that provide information about resources and research strategies for specific courses or assignments. Sessions are usually one class period long. We offer a hands-on research experience in the library's classroom, but can come to your room if that is more convenient.

Course-Integrated Instruction

Librarians collaborate with faculty to integrate library instruction into courses that contain a significant research component or that require the use of specialized electronic or print resources. Such instruction consists of lectures, learning activities, and group work presented in short sessions throughout the term.
