 Dr. Julius Dasch, Dallas, a Sul Ross State University graduate and former adjunct professor, is the 2013 recipient of the NASA National Space Grant Distinguished Service Award.

Dasch, a 1956 Sul Ross graduate and former director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) space grants program, will be honored March 1 in ceremonies at the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel, Arlington, Va.
The National Space Grant Distinguished Service Award was established to recognize individuals whose lives and careers have had a long lasting impact in a science, engineering or education field that is related to aeronautic, aviation, or space endeavors.
The inaugural award was presented in 2003 to former Senator and Secretary of the Treasury Lloyd M. Bentsen for his visionary work in creating the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Act. Subsequent recipients include John Glenn and Sally Ride.
Dasch also received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Sul Ross, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in geology. He received his master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and Ph.D. from Yale University. After retirement from NASA, Dasch and his wife, Pat, moved to Alpine, where they taught classes in rocket science. The couple recently moved to Dallas.
He received a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship to the Australian National University, Canberra, then taught geology and geochemistry at Oregon State University.
He joined NASA in 1988, retiring in 2002. While there, he served as program manager for the NASA National Space Grant and EPSCoR programs at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. His more than 150 publications are in Marine Geochemistry, Geochronology (terrestrial and lunar rocks and meteorites) and science education. He has served as chairman of the Geological Society of America (Cordilleran Section), President of the Oregon Academy of Science, and is a recipient of the Burlington Northern Faculty Fellowship for Teaching. Dasch also received the International Astronautical Federation Frank J. Malina Medal for Space Education in Beijing, China.
                The Sul Ross State University Graduate Student Center will host an open house Thursday, Jan. 31, 3-6 p.m., BAB Room 104.
                Refreshments will be served and the public is welcome. Information will be provided about services and activities for Spring Semester 2013.
                The Graduate Student Center, open to all Sul Ross graduate students, provides pro-active support services, including student orientation, mentoring, workshops on financial literacy, academic research, writing, thesis preparation and career and educational planning. In addition to a fully-equipped computer lab, the center also offers a conference room for group study or meetings, satellite phone and a personal locator beacon for check-out to graduate students conducting field work in remote locations. A projector and screen is available for student presentation rehearsals and workshops.

                A new Sul Ross State University website, which emphasizes customer empowerment and social media integration, will go live on the World Wide Web (www.) on Monday, Feb. 4.
               “The new website is designed with the customer in mind. We wanted to simplify website-navigation for our students while empower our faculty and staff  to effectively communicate Sul Ross’s success stories on the world wide web.” said Chandragupta Gudena, Chief Information Officer for the Office of Information Technology. He added that the inclusive project combined the efforts of the Web Advisory Committee, over 90 content managers at the four Sul Ross campuses (Alpine, Del Rio, Eagle Pass and Uvalde) and the OIT project team.
               “We are pleased to launch a new and more innovative Sul Ross website,” said Sul Ross President Dr. Ricardo Maestas. “We commend the diligent efforts of the many individuals involved to make this a reality.”
               The current website will be disabled and decommissioned on Monday, Feb. 4. On that date,  will point to the new website.
