VIDEO GAME DONATIONS SOUGHT FOR SUL ROSS’ NEW GAME ROOM

Donations of old computer games and game systems are sought for Sul Ross State University’s new game room, to be located in the Wildenthal Memorial Library.

"In this room, students in our game design program will be able to immerse themselves in the history of digital play," said Avram Dumitrescu, assistant professor of Art Gaming and Communication Design. "We want our students to understand the mechanics, art, storylines, and themes of older game titles."

The game room will have key examples of games, from modern gaming’s earliest relics to present-day hits. This collection will allow students the opportunity to study what has been made in the past and develop their own unique ideas. The game room will be useful for many other computer science and design courses being introduced at Sul Ross.

Dr. Usef Faghihi, assistant professor of Computer Science, has been working with a number of talented students to develop educational software, such as a math-tutoring application. By borrowing from game mechanics, these students are creating programs that make learning math easier and more enjoyable.

Donations can be delivered to the circulation desk at the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial library.

For more information, contact Dumitrescu, adumitrescu@sulross.edu.

SUL ROSS ALUM JACKIE HARVEY HONORED AT MINERAL WELLS HIGH SCHOOL

Sul Ross State University graduate Jackie Harvey, long-time teacher and coach at Mineral Wells High School, was inducted into the school’s Ram Elite Society May 22.

Harvey was inducted into the school’s Hall of Honor as an honorary alumnus. He has taught and coached at Mineral Wells since 1972, following his graduation from Sul Ross. In 2002, he was the first non-graduate to be inducted into the Mineral Wells High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 2004, Harvey was inducted into the Sul Ross Athletic Hall of Honor. While at Sul Ross, he was a three-year letter-winner in football and track and twice won the Lone Star Conference 220-yard dash championship. He helped the Lobos win their first LSC track and field title in 1971.

Harvey graduated from Refugio High School in 1967, where he was a four-sport athlete. He earned an Associate’s degree from Bee County Junior College (now Coastal Bend College) in 1969 before transferring to Sul Ross.

During his tenure at Mineral Wells, Harvey has coached football, basketball and served as the head boys and girls track and cross country coach. The Jackie Harvey Track Complex is named in his honor.
