    “Assassins,” a musical look at the lives and legacies of nine presidential assassins and would-be assassins, opens Friday, Nov. 15 at Sul Ross State University.
    Six performances are scheduled in the Studio Theatre, Francois  Fine Arts Building: Friday-Saturday, Nov. 15-16 and 22-23, at 8:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. matinees Sunday, Nov. 17 and 24.
    “Assassins,” written by John Weidman and Stephen Sondheim, is directed by Dona W. Roman with musical direction by Donald Callen Freed and Lana Potts.  Evoking a fraternity of political assassins and would-be assassins across a hundred years of U.S. history, Sondheim and Weidman provide a darkly-comic and compelling look at the lives and legacies of these individuals.
    “Assassins” examines success, failure and the questionable drive for power and celebrity in American society and includes some of Sondheim's tightest and most deft lyrics incorporating classic American music.  In 2004, the production received five Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival.
    Cast members include Cory Hill, Natalia, as John Wilkes Booth; Fernando Powers, Fort Stockton, as Charles Guiteau; Adrian Soto, El Paso,  as Leon Czolgosz; Marcelino Velazquez, El Paso, as Giuseppe Zangara; Concepcion Gomez, Imperial, as Samuel Byck; Westin Huffman, Fort Davis, as John Hinckley; Tresa Hamner, Fort Worth, as Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme; Ashley Jane Page, New Diana, as Sara Jane Moore;  Zane Ivey, Alpine,  as The Balladeer and Luke Miller, Baird, as The Proprietor.  The Ensemble for this production, representing the American populace, are Missy Embrey, Alpine; Kolbi Fowlkes, Sneads Ferry, N.C.;  Eddie Molinar, Alpine; Laura Ocanas, Kayla Perkins, Alpine;  Holly Sawyer, Cedar Park; Brooke Siler, Alpine; Reba Smith, Big Spring; Kaitlyn Wood, San Antonio; and Tim Wright.
    Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for seniors and children.  Assassins contains strong language and content.  Tickets are on sale now through or by calling ( 432) 837-8218.  The Sul Ross Theatre Program production of  “Assassins”  is a featured location of Alpine's 20th ArtWalk.

    Acknowledgment of $488,000 in gifts and donations, as well as a reorganization of existing departments and degree name change were among Sul Ross State University agenda items at the Board of Regents of the Texas State University System meeting.
    The Regents met Thursday and Friday (Nov. 7-8) at Lamar University, Beaumont.
    Other Sul Ross agenda items included 12th Class Day and Small Class reports for Sul Ross-Alpine and Rio Grande College; admissions data; finance reports; personnel reports for faculty and staff; a briefing by President Ricardo Maestas and approval of a  motion to erect a statue of Lawrence Sullivan Ross on the Alpine Campus.
    The Board approved reorganization of two departmental units within the College of Professional Studies. The action would move the Administrative Systems and Business Technology degree program from the Department of Business Administration to the Department of Industrial Technology.
    This move also necessitates a name change to Administrative Systems and Technology.  This action would be effective Spring 2014, upon approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.  
    The proposed reorganization is designed to provide a better and more appropriate fit with both the educational philosophy and scope of the Department of Industrial Technology. Adding a bachelor’s degree as a new component will also expand the “drawing power” of Industrial Technology, which is in a slow but steady growth mode.
    A total of $488,000 in gifts and donations were acknowledged. Gifts include:
    * $5,000 from Michael A. and Barbara M. Polemis, Old Chatham, N.Y., to the Museum of the Big Bend Advantage Fund.
    * $25,000 from JB Bar Ranch Holdings, LP, John Nau, III, Houston, to the Borderlands Research Institute’s (BRI) Bighorn Sheep Restoration Project.
    * $10,000 from the Alfred S. Gage Foundation, San Antonio, to the BRI Fund as the first installment of a $30,000 pledge.
    * $25,000 from Park Cities Quail, Dallas, to the BRI Park Cities Quail Coalition Fund.
    * $5,000 from Cross Timbers Quail Inc., Fort Worth to the BRI Desert Quail Program.
    * $39,000 from the Safari Club International Foundation, Tucson, Ariz.,. to the BRI Desert Mule Deer Program ($25,000) and the Bighorn Sheep Restoration Program ($14,000).
    * $10,000 from Lee M. Bass, Fort Worth, to the BRI Fund.
    * $10,000 from the San Antonio Quail Coalition, San Antonio, to the BRI Desert Quail Program.
    * $25,000 from the Dixon Water Foundation, Robert J. Potts, President and CEO, Marfa, to the DWF-Grazing Practices on DWF Ranch.
    * $10,000 from West Texas National Bank, David Rogers, Alpine, to the Museum of the Big Bend Advantage Fund.
    * $10,000 from Mo Anderson, Austin, to the Century Club Athletic Fund.
    * $30,000 from Quail Forever, San Antonio Chapter #3153, Richard Kattmann, President, Boerne, to the BRI Desert Quail Program.
    * $50,000 from Texas Parke & Wildlife Foundation, Dallas, as the first installment of a $1.4 million project with the BRI for pronghorn restoration.
    * $25,000 from the Texas Floodplain Management Association, Roy D. Sedwick, Executive Director, Cedar Park, to establish the James Michael Howard Scholarship Fund.

    * $5,000 from David L. Wilson, Alpine, to the McMillan-Wilson Scholarship Fund.
    * $5,000 from the Three Sojourners, Barksdale, to the Klein Trust Botanical Research Fund.
    * $99,000 from Dan Allen Hughes, Jr., Beeville, to the BRI Mirador Project for white-tail deer research.
    * $5,000 from L. Robin French, Houston, to the BRI Stewardship Program.
    * $5,000 from Parker Johnson, Houston, to the BRI Stewardship Program.
    * $95,000 from Dr. Charlie D. Nichols, Mansfield, to the Lawrence Sullivan Ross Statue Fund.
    The Board approved authorization to erect a statue of its namesake, Lawrence Sullivan Ross. Funding for the project has been received through a gift from Sul Ross graduate Dr. Charlie Nichols and his wife, Arlene. Final approval of the design and location will be made by the Board of Regents.


Young Entrepreneur award

Sul Ross State University alumnus Tiki Davis (left), was recognized as the Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2013 Odessa Black Chamber of Commerce Ebony Bar Awards ceremony. The event was held Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Odessa Regional Medical Center. Davis, who received a B.A. and M.A. from Sul Ross, owns and operates TDC Inc. and Touchdown Mobile Services in Odessa.
