The Sul Ross State University Physical Plant Operations is a customer-driven facilities maintenance and operation department dedicated to the success of the university community. For information about current job opportunities, see the employment page.

The Building Maintenance staff is responsible for maintaining and developing structural and environmental systems associated with campus facilities. This includes regular and preventive maintenance, carpentry and painting. Building Maintenance also manages in-house remodeling and repair projects. Area mechanics are distributed throughout the campus buildings to provide more immediate response to routine maintenance activities.

The General Services staff provides support to many areas of the university. It includes Custodial Services, General Stores/Central Receiving and the Motor Pool.

Custodial Services
The Custodial Services division is responsible for general housekeeping in all academic and administrative buildings to maintain interior building appearance and sanitary conditions. Staff members’ services include regular cleaning and trash removal. They move furniture only when it is associated with their cleaning process. They are available upon request to perform special assigned tasks such as preparation and clean-up requirements for conference and special events.

General Stores/Central Receiving
General Stores maintain a store of supplies available for purchase by university departments. Central Receiving is the hub of the package-delivery service on campus. For information, call extension 8089.

Motor Pool
The Motor Pool division is responsible for maintaining a fleet of university-owned vehicles, of which 12 are dual fuel/alternative fuel vehicles available for use by university employees on official state business and 45 are service vehicles used by Physical Plant staff. Grounds machinery and equipment is also maintained through the Motor Pool, as is welding and fabrication.

The Grounds Maintenance staff is responsible for maintaining the exterior physical environment of the campus grounds as well as vehicle and pedestrian traffic areas for the safe enjoyment of students, faculty and staff. In addition, the staff provides services such as refuse removal and equipment operations.

The Utilities Maintenance staff is responsible for maintaining and developing mechanical and electrical systems associated with campus facilities. This includes regular and preventive maintenance for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Energy management staff operates the building automation system. The building automation system is interconnected campuswide to operate the heating, cooling, security and fire-safety systems for most buildings. This building automation system is controlled from a central location to monitor, adjust and optimize the operation.

State Agency Energy Savings Program

State Agency Energy Savings Program Each state agency is to establish an energy conservation plan and set goals to reduce usage of electricity, natural gas and gasoline. Sul Ross State University’s Energy Conservation Plan and reports for this program are available online.
