M.Ed. Reading Specialist - Online

Thank you for your interest in the Master of Education -- Reading Specialist Program at Sul Ross State University. The complete Master of Education Reading Specialist Degree program is offered online. Reading Specialists serve in many positions including central office administrators, campus reading specialists, supervisors of campus reading programs, language arts and reading curriculum designers, and private practitioners. Our reading specialist program addresses reading instruction, the implementation of reading instruction, reading assessment, and language acquisition. It is delivered through Blackboard. All coursework requires approval of the major advisor and must be completed within six years. The program consists of 30 Semester Credit Hours (SCH) from the following areas:

Reading Component (21 SCH)

       ED 5308 Foundations of Reading (Fall)
       ED 6311 Emergent Literacy and Language Development (Fall)
       ED 6313 Teaching Reading in the Content Areas (Fall, Spring)
       ED 6314 Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Disabilities (Fall, Spring)
       ED 6317 Organization and Supervision of Reading Programs (Summer I)
       ED 6318 Literacy through Literature (Spring)
       ED 7312 Practicum in Reading (Fall, Spring)

  Professional Component (9 SCH)

       ED 5307 Graduate Research (Fall, Spring, Summer I, Summer II)
       ED 5316 Diversity in Public Education (Fall, Spring, Summer I & II)
       ED 6308 Advanced Human Growth and Development (Spring, Summer I) 

Certification in Texas requires: 

  1. Acceptance into the program
  2. Complete the Master's degree
  3. Pass the Department of Education Comprehensive Exam
  4. Pass the Department of Education pre-exam for the TExES #151
  5. Complete two years of classroom teaching
  6. Pass the Texas Education Agency TExES #151 Reading Specialist Exam
