J. Paul Sorrels, Ph. D.
Dr. J. Paul Sorrels was named Associate Provost/Dean at Rio Grande College beginning May 1, 2011.
Dr. Sorrels received a B.A. (1972) in Psychology from Howard Payne University, Brownwood, and M.A. (1976) and Ph.D. (1978) in Psychology from Texas Woman’s University, Denton with specializations in Marriage and Family Therapy, group dynamics, and research and statistics. He also conducted post-doctoral studies at Rice University, Houston, and Texas Tech University, Lubbock.
He has also worked as a Marriage and Family Therapist, a psychologist and clinical supervisor. He has over 30 years of teaching both undergraduate and graduate Psychology at Wayland Baptist University, Plainview, Texas, Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas, Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia and East Texas Baptist University, Marshall, Texas. He served as Director of Graduate Programs in Family Ministry and Family Psychology and was Dean of Graduate Studies and Special Programs at Hardin-Simmons University. Sorrels served as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the faculty at Bluefield (VA) College and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas, from 2000-2010. He has provided organizational consulting and Human Resources services to businesses. He has been active in community and church service in each of the communities he has lived.
