TExES

The Texas Administrative Code requires anyone seeking educator certification to pass comprehensive exams.

According to the Educational Testing Service, the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) and the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET) are criterion-referenced exams designed to measure a candidate's knowledge in relation to an established criterion. The TExES Educator Standards, based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), form the foundation for the TExES tests.

ATTENTION UNDERGRADUATE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM STUDENTS:  The TExES Content for the area in which you are seeking certification MUST BE PASSED prior to enrolling in Block III and Student Teaching!

Testing Approval
Undergraduate students take the TExES content and pedagogy professional responsibility exams during their last semester. Students preparing for the Superintendent, Principal, School Counselor, Reading Specialist and Educational Diagnostician also register to take their exams during their last semester of required courses.

Students must receive approval from their advisor and the director of Teacher Education prior to test registration. They will not be able to register to test through the Educational Testing Service until approval has been entered at the State Board of Educator Certification.

Test Registration
Once students have been entered as approved, they may register online at the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards web site. The site contains information about test dates and locations as well as preparation materials, FAQs and instructions about what is needed on the day of the test.
