First Year Seminars










First Year Seminar Courses are required of all freshmen at Sul Ross State University. This course has been implemented as a requirement after a 5 year data collection period that shows a significant improvement in student success and retention based on involvement in this program.  The focus of the course is to assist the student in the transition to college life, equipping them with the skill sets needed for success, as well as introducing them to campus resources.

  • E-mail, Blackboard, Banner Review
  • SRSU College Culture, Student Responsibilities
  • Motivation, Goal Setting
  • Time Management, Stress Management
  • Note-taking, Study Skills
  • LASSI:  Learning and Study Strategies Inventory
  • Student Organizations, SRSU Traditions
  • Relationships:  Roommates, Parents, Dating
  • Information Literacy, Plagiarism
  • Financial Aid, Money Matters
  • Advising, Registration
  • Career Planning

Additional components of the FYS courses are determined by the faculty member teaching each section.  These courses are intended to be full of fun activities and support team-building among the cohort.  We are excited that SRSU has taken this step for our students.  Let's Go Lobos!
