TSI & THEA
Requirements for the Texas Success Initiative, the successor to TASP, must be met by students planning to pursue a bachelor's degree in Texas. The Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) fulfills the the rules of the TSI as an initial educational assessment.
THEA is required of all students "...who enter public institutions of higher education in the fall of 1989 and thereafter..." As of the fall 1998, college students must attempt this test before enrolling in classes.
Students may be exempt if they:
- Have enrolled in a one year certificate program of less than 42 semester hours
- Have earned college course work (three or more credit hours) before 1989
- Have certain disabilities
- Have earned sufficiently high scores on the SAT, ACT or TAKS tests
THEA is designed to provide information about the reading, mathematics and writing skills of students entering public colleges, universities and educator-preparation programs in public and private institutions. The content of the THEA test is the same as the former TASP test.
THEA is given at Sul Ross State University on Saturday test dates. Test information and registration booklets may be obtained at the Career Services and Testing Office, UC 211, or visit www.thea.nesinc.com for online registration, registration bulletin and practice tests.
The Quick THEA, an approved alternative test for the THEA, is identical in all respects to the THEA except that test dates are set by SRSU. The Quick THEA may not be retaken within 30 days; however, students may take THEA during that period.
The fee is $44.
Visit UC-112 or call (432) 837-8357.
The COMPASS, an approved alternative test for the THEA, is computer administered, and test scores are available immediately following test completion. It is usually administered shortly before orientation dates as well as by appointment.
Call (432) 837-8357
The fee is $65 per initial administration for all or partial sections. There is a $25 fee to retest per section (Reading, Writing or Math) and $65 to retest for all sections.
