Biology Graduate ProgramDegree Options
Culminating requirements for both Plan I and Plan II are a thesis defense presentation and comprehensive oral exam. For Plan III both oral and written comprehensive exams are required. Plan III must be approved by the Biology faculty. A "mini thesis" is usually a one-semester project. The department will, at the discretion of the student and the committee, accept toward the master's degree six semester credit hours of coursework in a department other than the major. Application for Graduate Studies The first step is to fill out the University's Graduate Application, available online at www.applytexas.org. You may also want to fill out a university financial aid application at the same time. From Sul Ross' web page again click on Student Services and then Financial Aid. If you are interested in applying for a Department Assistantship, research or teaching, please complete the attached form, or come by the Department Office and pick one up. Graduate Assistantships The Department of Biology offers both teaching and research assistantships. Teaching assistantships usually involve preparation and presentation of freshmen (e.g., General Botany and General Zoology) and selective sophomore (e.g., Microbiology and Human Anatomy and Physiology) courses. Research assistantships may include working within the herbarium or vertebrate or invertebrate collections, or with faculty on current projects. Stipends are $ 7,000 for nine months with half insurance costs covered, for a two year maximum. Graduate Student Coordinator For information, contact: Dr. James C.
