Morgan is the 10th president of SRSU, having been appointed to the post on September 1, 1990. He is the first president of Sul Ross to come from within the ranks of the faculty at the university.

His career at Sul Ross began in 1975 as an associate professor of mathematics. He has served as department chair, dean and executive assistant to the president.
