Mathematics

The mathematics program offers a standard curriculum in mathematics consisting of:

  • calculus
  • differential equations
  • geometry
  • foundations of elementary mathematics
  • number theory and cryptology
  • discrete mathematics
  • abstract algebra
  • real analysis
  • numerous special topics courses

In recent years these special topics have included complex variables, numerical analysis, number sense and a standards-based algebra and mathematical models in the fine arts.

Minor in Mathematics

Students may minior in mathematics by completing 27 semester credit hours in math: Math 1315, 1316, 2413, 2414, 2415 and 2330 plus six additional advanced hours in mathematics.

Minors who score adequately on the CLEP, DANTES, ACT or SAT examinations may omit Math 1315 and 1316. See the Credit by Examination section of the catalog for details.

Teacher Certification

In addition to the traditional mathematics degree, the department has a special focus on the mathematical training of preservice and inservice teachers.
