Master of Education - Educational Diagnostician

The master's degree for an educational diagnostician requires 36 semester hours in education related to handicapped, psycho-educational, diagnostic assessment and resource areas. Students in the program must also have experience and educational background in special education.

Graduate students should familiarize themselves with the graduate program and degree requirements provided in the SRSU Catalog. All coursework requires approval of the major advisor.

Course Requirements

For the master of education degree, coursework must be completed within six years. A transfer maximum of 12 semester credit hours is allowed for the master of education degree upon approval of the major advisor and the department chair. The following courses are required:

* ED 5306 Assessment of Individual Intelligence
** ED 5307 Graduate Research
ED 5312 Advanced Survey, Exceptional Children
ED 5316 Teaching the Multicultural Learner or
SOC 5303 Multicultural Society
* ED 5320 Advanced Methodology for Exceptional Children
* ED 5321 Resource Room Test Administration
ED 5319 School Law
* ED 5323 Appraisal of Educational Disabilities
ED 5324 Advanced Educational Psychology
* ED 5325 Advanced Educational Remediation
ED 6308 Advanced Human Growth and Development
ED 6314 Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Disabilities

* Must be taken at Sul Ross-Alpine campus for ExCET/TExES certification preparation
**Required for degree; must be taken at Sul Ross-Alpine campus within first 12 hours

Certification Requirements

For certification, the applicant must:

  1. Hold a valid Texas teaching certificate with endorsement, teaching field or specialization area in special education; students who do not have a current valid special education certificate must contact the major advisor at the SRSU Alpine campus, (432) 837-8170, for an appointment.
  2. Hold an earned master's degree
  3. Complete a minimum of two years of teaching in a TEA-accredited school, with at least one year in special education
  4. Pass ExCET/TExES #61 Educational Diagnostician
