New Student Technology Tips

As a Sul Ross student, there are three primary technology tools you will regularly use: your SRSU e-mail account, Banner Self-Service and Blackboard. Information about these three tools are provided below.

Banner Self-Service

BSS provides SRSU students with the ability to register at Sul Ross over the web and add or drop classes online. BSS also allows students web access to transcripts, course schedules, financial assistance information and a variety of other student-related information.

• How do I access Banner? Go to the Sul Ross home page and click on the "Banner" link (on the "Quicklinks" tab at the top right of the homepage). Then log in using your Student ID and PIN. You may be asked to create a personal security question.
• What Login Info Do I Need? You'll need your Student ID and a PIN
• Student ID = Your Student ID Number (SID)
• PIN = A 6-digit number you will need to get either by calling our 24/7 Help Desk OR from the Admissions and Records Office:

Blackboard

Some courses may make use of Blackboard, an online teaching and learning tool. Your instructor will let you know if your class uses Blackboard or not. Courses identified in the class schedule as Web-Delivered will not meet regularly but will instead use the Blackboard system to deliver course content. If you are enrolled in a Web-Delivered class, contact your instructor.

• How do I access Blackboard? Go to the Sul Ross home page and select "Blackboard" under Quick Links (or from the menu bar running along the bottom half of the home page).
• What Login Info Do I Need? You'll need a username and password.
  • Username = Usually, first initial + plus 3 of  last name + 4 random numbers (if you are new to Sul Ross).
  • Password = A randomly generated, case-sensitive, alpha-numeric string.
• Where do I go for Blackboard Help?
  • For login issues, or to get your username and password information, contact Help Desk at 837-8765 or off-campus toll-free at 1-888-691-5071

Web-Based E-Mail

Your SRSU e-mail account is official means of communication between your instructors, the university and you. Please plan on checking it regularly!

• How do I access my SRSU e-mail? Go to the Sul Ross home page and select "Web-based E-Mail" in Quick Links, or click"Email" on the menu bar running along the bottom half of the home page (If you get a security popup screen, click OK.)
• What Login Info Do I Need? You'll need a username and password.
  • Username = Usually, first initial + plus 3 of  last name + 4 random numbers (if you are new to Sul Ross).

Library WebCat Catalog and Research Databases

Use WebCat to discover what books, media, reserves and periodicals the library owns and what is in the collections of the Archives of the Big Bend. Use the Library's research databases to find articles in periodicals.

• How do I access these? Go to the Sul Ross home page and select "Library" under Quick Links. Click on "WebCat Catalog" or "Research Databases". Click on "WebCat" in the top navigation bar or "Find Articles in Research Databases" under Research Resources. 
• What Login Info Do I Need? At a Sul Ross computer, just use the links provided. For remote access, enter your Sul Ross e-mail login and password when prompted. More information on remote access can be found at the following URL: http://www.sulross.edu/library/faqs.php#remote
