
Established in 1911 to consolidate the support and management of teacher colleges, the Texas State University System has evolved into a network stretching from the Louisiana border to far West Texas. It serves more than 64,000 students and has a total operating budget of more than $500 million.
The system has been through several name changes, beginning as the State Normal School Board. It was later known as State Teacher's Colleges and State Senior Colleges/Universities. The Texas State University System took its current name in 1975.
Member Universities
There are now more than half a dozen components offering a broad range of programs, with various specialized degree offerings emerging at each location. Program options within the system range from technical certificate plans through six doctoral programs. The component institutions include:
The organization, control and management of the system is vested in a nine-member board of regents appointed by the governor. The regents appoint a chancellor to carry out its policies. The system office is in Austin.
