Graduate Degrees in Animal Science

Sul Ross offers both thesis and non-thesis programs of study for master's degrees in animal science. The programs emphasize methods of improving or better using agricultural resources and prepares students for doctoral programs and for careers in teaching, extension service, research management and other occupations that require the higher-level abilities of a resource manager or scientists.

Offerings in collateral fields enable students to develop a program tailored to their particular needs and interests.

Master of Science in Animal Science (Thesis)

The master of science program requires 36 hours of graduate work and includes the following courses:

  • ANSC 5101 Graduate Seminar (two registrations)
  • ANSC 5311 Scientific Writing
  • ANSC 5312 Biostatistical Analysis I
  • ANSC 5313 Biostatistical Analysis II
  • ANSC 6301 Thesis Proposal
  • ANSC 6302 Thesis Defense

In addition to these courses, students must complete 13 semester hours of ANSC graduate work. These may include upper-level undergraduate courses in ANSC for graduate credit (G) or graduate-level courses from other departments.

Master of Agriculture in Animal Science (Non-Thesis)

The master of agriculture program requires 36 hours of graduate work and includes the following courses:

  • ANSC 5101 Graduate Seminar (two registrations)
  • ANSC 5301 Seminar in Animal Science*
  • ANSC 5307 Physiology and Biochemistry of Muscle as a Food
  • ANSC 5309 Advanced Animal Nutrition
  • ANSC 5310 Advanced Reproduction Physiology
  • ANSC 5311 Scientific Writing
  • ANSC 5312 Biostatistical Analysis I
  • ANSC 5313 Biostatistical Analysis II
  • ANSC 5317 Agricultural Biochemistry
  • ANSC 5318 Agricultural Genetics

*One registration from Agricultural and Natural Resource Economics, International Development Agriculture or Commodity Futures and Options Trading.

In addition, students must complete seven semester hours of ANSC graduate work. These may include upper-level undergraduate courses in ANSC for graduate credit (G) or graduate-level courses from other departments.
