Communication Program

The humanistic study and practice of human communication - whether applied to individuals relating to themselves or others, family units, public forums, or media forms - provides the fundamental basis for understanding our ways of thinking, knowing and relating to each other through the symbols we share.

The Communication program offers a B.A. degree in Communication, along with teacher certification (secondary level). Students may also minor in Communication. Journalism courses may be applied to the non teacher certification major or minor.

The program is active in all forms of communication. Each year in December, students from across West Texas gather on campus for the Sul Ross Fall UIL Academic Tournament. UIL style events include CX and LD debate,  individual speaking events, and various academic events. A number of students and faculty are employed as judges at UIL sanctioned events throughout Texas. The program also sponsors student produced radio and television programming from the radio station and television studio located in the Francois Fine Arts Building. KSRC-FM Radio broadcasts a mix of music styles, news and information while KSRU-TV production programs are broadcast through the campus cable system. Students don't have to be communication majors or minors to play major roles in broadcasting at Sul Ross. Along with the Theatre program, the Communication program creates live radio theatre by the Sul Ross Radio Theatre Project.
