Student Announcers Replace Retired Curry

(Correction: John Curry has not actually retired and only announced basketball games. We are sorry for the errors.)

Since the retirement of John Curry, the announcer at the volleyball and basketball games, two new voices are emerging from the speakers. They are the voices of Nitra Woods, Andrews, and Kyndrick Hill, Houston.

Both are familiar faces on campus and are a good fit for the job. Woods, who is a senior member of the Lady Lobos basketball team, announces volleyball games, while Hill, who works with Sully Productions, currently announces Lobo football games. Dr. Keith West and Coach Kay Whitley have been working together to provide announcers for the department since Curry's retirement.

"I recommended Kyndrick and Nitra to Coach Whitley," West said.

Coach Whitley first asked Woods to call a volleyball game as a stand-in, but the position soon became permanent.

"Coach Whitley asked me because Travis (Hendryx) was out of town at the first football game," Woods said. "It was a good experience."

Coach Whitley wanted to choose students that people knew and who would be familiar to other students as well.
After telling Woods she needed someone for football, Hill was recommended.

"I called the second half of the first home football game," Hill said.

"The first half was just breaking me in."

Both students are enrolled in Keith West's basic radio class, where voice work is a major part of the instruction. Along with the class, their experience in sports adds to their learning.

"Kyndrick and Nitra have had experience in other communication courses refining their announcing skills, and I see their sports work as another step in their training process," West said.

With both Woods and Hill being communication majors, this is a good opportunity to expand their skills and gain experience in their desired field. Neither of them thought the job would be too hard, and claim that it's actually easy, and looks good on a resume.

"It's not really hard at all," Hill said.

"It's related to sports, and you just have to know what you're doing."

Both enjoy the experience and feel that this will help them in the future.
