Directions to Get DLG Files into ArcView
- 1. Download the appropriate DLG files from the USGS web site.Note: see the "Quad Help" link on the GIS lab page for assistance in finding 1:100K map names. Remember that the 1:100K DLG maps come in two halves, and east and a west. The east half is divided into quadrants 3,4,7, and 8. The west half is divided into quadrants 1,2,5, and 6.
- 2. Unzip the files.
- 3. Rename the unzipped files with the extension *.dlg. It is a good idea to follow the DOS 8.3 convention.
- 4. Copy the utility DLGLX149 into the directory with your DLG files.
- 5. Run the DLGLX149 utility. A DOS window will open. From the prompt, type in the following:
/h=12/no=lines /type=o
Then follow the directions. If for "Input file spec", you type "*.dlg", it will merge all existing DLG files in the directory.
It is a good idea to keep each of the types of data separate: roads, railroads, boundaries, hydrography and hypsography (if it is present, it usually is not).
