How to Change Projections Using ArcView 3.1

Maybe you have a map boundary in UTM and you want to plot it within the quadrangle outline and a park/county/state boundary, all of which are in decimal degrees (arcusa data). You can change the projection.

Details for ArcView Version 3.1

(Note: Version 3.2 has a more elaborate projection utility, but this type of stuff is more accurately done in ArcInfo):

  1. Set your working directory.
  2. Load the Projector! extension (if it is not available, see KMU for solution).
  3. Load the UTM shape file (map boundary or whatever) that you want to merge with decimal degree data.
  4. Press the new "Projector" icon (it looks like a north arrow).
  5. Choose the input projection (you have to know this -- probably UTM, zone 13, NAD27 or NAD83.
  6. Choose the output projection -- decimal degrees.
  7. Say yes to recalculate areas.
  8. Say no to "add to current view."
  9. Let it finish.
  10. Go to a new view.
  11. Add the new theme. Check to make sure that it appears to be in decimal degrees, then add your other decimal degree themes, and the park boundary theme ...
