Five Point Win For Men's TeamArt Gonzalez' 19 points sparked four players in double figures as Sul Ross State University edged host Howard Payne University 65-60 in Monday night's (Nov. 26) American Southwest Conference opener. Coach Greg Wright's team, 2-1 overall, returns home Thursday, Nov. 29, to face the University of the Ozarks, an ASC East Division rival, at 7:30 p.m. Gonzalez, El Paso Eastwood, drilled five three-pointers, four in a decisive five-minute span to open the second half. Filiberto Torres, Clint, followed with two of his three treys as the Lobos rallied from a 33-29 halftime deficit. Gonzalez' buckets, from 18:59 to the 14:16 mark, offset two treys by the Yellow Jackets' Travis Dawson and helped turn the four-point deficit to a 43-39 advantage. Abe Ely's, El Paso Hanks, hoop at16:20 put the Lobos in front to stay, 40-39. In all, Sul Ross meshed seven of 10 shots beyond the arc in the second half, 10 of 18 for the game. Moises Morales', Fort Hancock, layup gave the Lobos a 56-45 edge with 8:06 to play, and Jimmy Martinez, El Paso Andress, dropped a pair of free throws with 12 ticks left to cement the win. Sul Ross attempted just 43 shots, but hit 21 (49 percent) and netted 13 of 18 free throw tries. Jermaine Packer, Midland Lee, pulled down nine rebounds and Torres, who finished with 16 points, grabbed seven as the Lobos held a 31-26 edge on the boards. Ricky Aguilar, El Paso Franklin, contributed 10 points, five assists and four steals, while Abe Ely, El Paso Hanks, scored 12 and handed out four assists. Howard Payne, 1-2, 0-1, shot 42 percent from the floor (21-50), seven of 20 beyond the arc and hit 11 of 16 free throws. Tom Hermann scored 13 and Dawson nine for HPU. Lubbock Christian University used an early second-half run to pull away from Sul Ross, 66-51 at the Gallego Center Saturday, Nov. 24. Three treys in a three-and-a-half-minute span sparked an 11-0 burst by the Chaparrals, 4-1, extending a 26-25 halftime edge. Sul Ross closed within three points on three occasions, but the Chaps answered each rally. Jacob Kockenga tallied 18 points and Tommy Lane 15 to lead LCU. The Lobos led by seven, 22-15, with 2:50 left before halftime, but LCU stormed back. Lane's layup with 28 seconds remaining established the guests' intermission edge and they never trailed thereafter. Torres paced Sul Ross with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Gonzalez contributed 13, including eight of eight at the foul line. Ely added 12 points, but Sul Ross was hampered by 33 percent shooting (16-49), only three of 13 beyond the arc. LCU's bench was the difference in the contest, outscoring the Lobo reserves 19-4. The winners hit 39 percent (22-56) from the floor, including seven of 16 from long range, and cashed 15 of 29 free throw tries. Sul Ross answered with 16 of 18 at the stripe. Packer supplied eight rebounds for Sul Ross, five on the offensive glass, and scored six points. Aguilar had three assists and two steals. Lobo Tracks...Gonzalez (15.3 points per game), Torres (13.7) and Ely (12.3) lead the Lobo offense, which averages 62 points while yielding 59...Torres is averaging 7.7 rebounds and Packer 7.3, while Aguilar has 12 assists...Sul Ross is shooting 44 percent from the floor, 43 percent from three-point range and 79 percent at the foul line....Torres is netting70 percent (16-23), including all five of his three-point tries....Ely is shooting 54 percent, while Gonzalez has netted 10 of 20 three-pointers and all 14 of his charity tosses. Lady Lobos End Road Trip 1-2A pair of road losses sandwiched Sul Ross State University's first women's basketball win of the 2007-2008 season. Nationally-ranked Howard Payne University scored an 84-51 triumph at Brownwood Monday night, Nov. 26, to open American Southwest Conference action. Coach David Tandy's team, 1-3, 0-1 in the ASC West Division, hosts the University of the Ozarks, an ASC East Division foe, on Thursday, Nov. 29, 5:30 p.m., at the Gallego Center. Second-ranked Howard Payne shot 63 percent from the floor in the second half, outscoring the Lady Lobos 48-22, to cruise to victory. Sul Ross trailed 36-29 at intermission, but managed only 29 percent (8-28) from the floor in the last 20 minutes. Meia Daniels tallied a game-high 26 points for the Lady Jackets, 3-0, 1-0 ASC West Division, while Stacey Blalock netted 15 and Kimberly Hoffman 12. HPU finished with 52 percent shooting (33-63) and a 47-28 rebound edge, 10 by Hoffman. Morgan Johnson, Christoval, notched 20 points for Sul Ross and Nitra Woods, Andrews, added 14. Both grabbed five rebounds. Sul Ross shot 34 percent (20-59) from the floor, two of 14 on three-pointers and hit nine of 12 free throws. Angelique Benton and Woods tallied 21 points apiece as the Lady Lobos won their first game of the season, 79-71 over Dallas Christian College Nov. 20. Woods grabbed 13 rebounds to complete a double-double, while Benton, El Paso Parkland, added five rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Johnson added 10 points and 10 boards and Isela Garza, El Paso Eastwood, notched nine points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Janice Mitchell, Round Rock Stony Point, directed the attack with eight assists and the Lady Lobos shot 50 percent in the first half, including nine of 14 from three-point range, to cruise to a 45-25 advantage. The Lady Lobos dominated every department, 60-23 in rebounding, 53 percent shooting to just 34 percent for their hosts, and committed only 13 turnovers while handing out 21 assists. Woods hit three of four shots from three-point range, hit eight of 12 field goal tries in all and grabbed eight offensive rebounds. A late University of Dallas run pushed the Lady Crusaders to a 72-62 win over Sul Ross in Nov. 19 action in Dallas. U-Dallas erased a three-point Lady Lobo lead with 11 minutes left in the game and used a 6-0 burst for the final margin. Mitchell scored 15 points on six of seven shooting and added four assists and two steals for the Lady Lobos, who trailed 33-26 at halftime. Woods added 14 points and four rebounds, while Shiloh Shugart, Merkel, netted 10, including a pair of three-pointers, and contributed three assists. Shugart's trey pulled Sul Ross ahead 44-43 with 12:30 to play, and Woods' bucket and free throws by Casi Tribett, Eden, and Benton produced a 48-45 edge with 11:16 left. U-Dallas pulled ahead 49-48 on Cara Sczepanski's hoop a minute later, and the Lady Lobos forged their last tie on Johnson's free throw at 10:03. Woods used a hoop and two charity tosses to keep her team within three, 60-57, at the five-minute mark. Garza drained a three and DeShonna Hill, Odessa Permian, netted a jumper to close within 66-62 at 1:34 before Shanie Cardinal meshed four free throws and assisted on Joirdan Cole's hoop to close out the scoring. Sul Ross shot 34 percent from the floor (21-61), six of 15 beyond the arc and hit 14 of 17 free throws. Benton and Brittany Hatch, Richardson Pearce, added six points each, with Benton blocking two shots and grabbing four rebounds. U-Dallas, led by 14 points each from Amy King and Cole and 13 from Sxzepanski, drained 53 percent of their field goal tries (25-47) and added 21 of 30 at the foul line. Lobo Tracks...Woods leads the team in scoring (16.8 points per game), rebounding (8.5) and has cashed 20 of 22 free throw attempts....Mitchell is averaging 9.8 points and has handed out 24 assists....Johnson is averaging 10.3 points per game, while Benton has an 8.8 average and seven blocked shots...The Lady Lobos are shooting 76 percent (46-60) at the foul line. Woods Named Player Of The WeekSul Ross senior post player Nitra Woods, Andrews, has been selected as American Southwest Conference West Division Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday, Nov. 26. Woods averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds over two games, including pouring in 21 and grabbing 13 boards in a 79-71 road win over Dallas Christian. Woods also added three steals and three assists. Seven Lobo Athletes Earn ASC Academic HonorsSeven Sul Ross State University student-athletes have been selected for the American Southwest Conference Academic All-Conference list for fall 2007, the conference office announced Tuesday morning, Nov. 20. To be eligible for ASC Academic All-Conference honors, student-athletes must have lettered in the fall 2007 season, be in at least the second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average (GPA ) of 3.0 or better.
