Lobo and Lady Lobo B-ball Teams Dominate Schreiner MountaineersMen Take the Lead with Help from Morales...Moises Morales' steal and layup gave Sul Ross State University the lead to stay as the Lobos tripped visiting Schreiner University 83-68 in American Southwest Conference men's basketball action at the Gallego Center Thursday, Jan. 17. Morales, Fort Hancock, scored nine of his 12 points in the first six and half minutes of the second half, helping the Lobos, 5-9, 4-6 ASC West Division snap a 37-all halftime time. His first bucket gave Sul Ross a 39-37 edge and a three-pointer with 13:26 left built a 51-45 lead. The winners never trailed in the second half. Art Gonzalez, El Paso Eastwood, hit five three-pointers among his team-high 17 points, while Filiberto Torres, Clint, netted 13. Roderick Gunter, Houston Westside, and Henry Flores, San Antonio Stevens, came off the bench to supply 16 and 13, respectively. Gunter and Flores combined for 18 points in the final 9:29. Fellow reserve Karl Barnes, Houston Elsik, netted six straight free throws in the final 1:30 to hold off the Mountaineers. Sul Ross finished with 55 percent shooting (30-55), including nine of 18 from long range. The Lobos added 14 of 19 free throws and handed out 18 assists to just six turnovers. Anthony Miller, Amarillo High, had seven assists and Gunter and Gonzalez three apiece. Schreiner, 4-9, 4-5, received a game-high 20 points from Ronnie Barnie and 15 from Riley Battle. The Mountaineers held a 33-23 rebound edge, but committed 17 turnovers and shot 47 percent from the floor (24-51), with eight of 16 three-point tries and 12 of 16 at the foul line. ... and the Ladies Win 62-54 in Last Six SecondsNitra Woods posted a double-double and Isela Garza snared 15 rebounds as Sul Ross State University tripped visiting Schreiner University 62-54 in women's basketball Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Gallego Center. Sul Ross, 5-8 overall, 4-6 in the American Southwest Conference West Division, led 29-22 at halftime and never trailed in the second half. Woods, Andrews, scored a game-high 18 points and snared 11 rebounds, five on the offensive glass. Garza, El Paso Eastwood, had 13 defensive boards; Janice Mitchell, Round Rock Stony Point, supplied 14 points and six assists, while Angelique Benton (El Paso Parkland) added 10 points and six rebounds. Casi Tribett, Eden, added seven rebounds and seven points off the bench as the Lady Lobos held a 62-43 margin on the boards. Woods scored five straight points and Mitchell added a three-point play to key an 11-2 run over a five-minute span. The rally turned a 16-9 deficit into a 20-18 lead. Anna Fareed's trey with 3:02 left gave the Lady Mountaineers, 5-9, 4-6, a brief 21-20 edge, but Woods' two free throws and a jumper from Benton established a 24-21 Sul Ross margin. Benton's layup and three more charity tosses from Woods built the seven-point halftime lead. Cold shooting plagued both teams throughout the contest, but Benton's two hoops established a 33-22 Lady Lobo margin three and a half minutes into the second session. Lynn Stow's three-pointer pulled Schreiner within 40-37 at 10:10, but Mitchell answered with a trey 19 ticks later. The Lady Mountaineers closed within 55-50 and 57-52, but Woods and Mitchell responded with a layup and two free throws, respectively. Woods netted two more charity tosses with six seconds remaining for the final eight-point advantage. Sul Ross shot 33 percent (20-60), two of nine from long range, and netted 20 of 37 free throws, 10 of 14 by Woods. Schreiner hit 30 percent (18-61), four of 19 on three-pointers and missed 17 of 31 foul shots. Monica Enriquez had 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Fareed scored 13. |
