School Administration Program

Welcome to the School Administration Program at Sul Ross State University. We take pride in the fact that our school administration program has been preparing graduates for many years to serve as superintendents, central office administrators, principals, assistant principals, and supervisors. Graduates of our principal preparation program receive a Master of Education degree with a major in school administration.  The Master of Education degree with a major in school administration requires successful completion of a minimum of 36 semester credit hours of approved coursework and must be completed within six years.

Successful completion of the 39 credit-hour Standard Principal Certification program provides the academic preparation required for certification as a principal in Texas.

The Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) requires that an applicant for principal certification:

•     hold a master’s degree,

•     have a minimum of two years’ teaching experience in an accredited school,

•     participate in an approved TExES review, and

•     pass the TExES in school administration (68).

The 18-hour Superintendent Certification program offers the academic preparation necessary to serve as a superintendent or central office administer in Texas.

The SBEC requirements for superintendent certification includes:

•     hold a standard principal or mid-management certificate,

•     have at least two years teaching experience in an accredited school,

•     participate in an approved TExES review, and

•     pass the Superintendent TExES (64).

Students interested in probationary certification to work as a principal, assistant principal, or superintendent are required to complete specific coursework, plus other program requirements, before being eligible to apply for a permit.

Classes are offered in a convenient weekend format as well as web-enhanced and web-delivered formats.  During Spring and Fall semesters classes meet on four designated weekends (Saturday and Sunday). For Summer sessions the format is slightly modified, classes meet on designated days (i.e., Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, or Saturday and Sunday) for four consecutive weeks in June and July. Students may enroll in a maximum of 9 semester credit hours during each Fall and Spring term, excluding an internship and a maximum of 6 semester credit hours in each of the two annual summer sessions. Students may join the program at the beginning of any term.

All of the members of the school administration faculty have experience in teaching and administration.  They continue to remain current and up-to-date on educational leadership practices.
