Driving Directions to Alpine
Since Alpine is somewhat off the beaten path, we're frequently asked for driving directions. The following were developed and used with entertainers coming to campus to perform for the students. They've been used by many folks and are easy to follow.
Since most folks come to Alpine through El Paso or Midland/Odessa, they are currently the only directions online. The directions might seem a little vague, but once you're on the road and at the locations mentioned, they'll make sense.
Directions from Midland/Odessa to Alpine and UC Services
- Take I20 West.
- Exit at Monahans - in town, not the 1st exit! The road sign says for Kermit and Fort Stockton.
- Turn left at the light and go under the highway - you're on Highway 18.
- Stay on Highway 18 and keep going on to Fort Stockton - you'll go through Royalty and Grandfalls to get there.
- When you get to Fort Stockton, Highway 18 will connect with I10.
- Take I10 towards El Paso until you see the exit for Alpine.
- Take the Alpine exit, turn left at the stop sign and go across the overpass over I10. Now you're on Highway 67. Keep going - it's a long way, about 55 miles!
- Eventually you'll come to a Y in the road. Bear to the right and you'll be on Highway 90. Now it's a straight shot into Alpine.
- The Alpine Inn will be on your right as you come into town. The Ramada is on the other side of town.
- The map found at http://www.sulross.edu/docs/uc/campus+map.pdf will help you navigate around the campus.
- Continue on Highway 90 and the University will be on your right. Entrance 1 is at the Gallego Center and Entrance 2 at Lawrence Hall. Bear right at the blinking yellow light and Entrance 3 will be on your right. That road leads up to the Administration Building.
- Take a right at Entrance 4 and you'll go up Avenue B and the University Center (a large, brick building) will be on your right. Use the 2nd parking lot entrance and walk between the UC and a rock building (the McCoy Building housing the Museum of the Big Bend).
- Around the bend in the sidewalk will be a door and just inside that door, across from the glass-walled Game Room is the Campus Activities Office. The UC Services Coordinator's office is in the Campus Activities Suite.

- Continue East on the access road until the stop sign at Highway 90. There'll be a convenience store and gas station on the right.
- Turn right and follow Highway 90 through Valentine (about 30 miles) - be sure to slow down quickly at Valentine, they have a 45 mph speed limit in town and they REALLY enforce it!
