Student Health Services is staffed by a registered nurse and is located in University Center, suite 211. Normal hours of operation are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Minor treatments, over-the-counter medication and basic first-aid supplies are available at no cost to students. Wellness talks for student groups and American Red Cross CPR/First-Aid training for university employees can be requested by contacting health services at 837-8102 or health@sulross.edu.
The university has contracted with the Alpine Medical Center to provide basic medical care. Click here for covered services. They are located at the corner of North 2nd Street and East Avenue E. The center is staffed by a board-certified family practice physician and certified family nurse practitioners.
Students may walk-in without an appointment between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on weekdays. Additional walk-in times depend on the clinic's scheduled workload. Students are encouraged to either call for an appointment or be referred by the university's nurse. The center's hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. A current student ID card will be requested at check-in. Sports physicals are by appointment only through the Alpine Medical Center and are given on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Examination is provided at no cost to all varsity athletes, cheerleaders, rodeo team members and intramural referees. Students with abnormal exam results are responsible for the cost of additional diagnostic testing. Please schedule at least one week in advance. Call (432) 837-5505.
The history and physical form is available here for those individuals planning to have their sports physical done by their own medical provider. Completed forms must be returned to the athletic department at the time of application for sports related activities.
Treatment for sports injuries, physical evaluation and rehabilitation services is provided to student athletes at the Gallego sports facility on campus. The Head Athletic Trainer may be contacted at (432) 837-8235 or e-mail: cprude@sulross.edu.
Students are responsible for the cost of all emergency room, hospital, ambulance and non-university health care services received during normal business hours, after-hours, weekends and holidays. The Big Bend Regional Medical Center is located on Hwy 118 North. The emergency department is open 24 hours. For life threatening emergencies call 911.

Incoming students are encouraged to have their vaccination status reviewed by a medical provider. You may obtain a blank Personal Immunization Record from health services in UC-211. Students should keep this personal document in a safe place and have it available when seeking medical care.
Meningococcal is a serious bacterial infection that can rapidly lead to permanent disability and death. Adolescents, young adults and students living in residential housing are at increased risk for acquiring the disease. Click here to learn more from the CDC about vaccination against meningococcal. The student health fee does not pay for health insurance. University athletes have limited supplemental accident coverage through the Athletic Department, call (432) 837-8226 for details.
The health insurance requirement for domestic students at Sul Ross is fully voluntary. It is strongly recommended that these students maintain a comprehensive health plan. International students must show proof of health insurance that is good in the United States. Information on health insurance basics and college student coverage is provided by the Texas Department of Insurance.
The American College Student Association (ACSA) is one of many student organizations that offer a group health plan to their members. Brochures are available in UC-211. Another option in an individual policy like The Sentry Student Security Plan or other third party administrator such as Macori or AIP International.
On-line brokers such as Health Plan One can compare different plans to help match your insurance needs.
