Athletic Training at Sul Ross

Sul Ross State University offers an internship program in athletic training in which students have the opportunity to record hours under the direct supervision of a licensed and certified athletic trainer. The internship also has a specially-designed curriculum that allows students to sit for the Texas Department of Health Licensing Exam.

The athletic training program  offers a co-ed environment with the opportunity to work with a variety of sports, including football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, track, tennis, baseball, softball and rodeo. Students get hands-on experience by being assigned to various sports and being responsible for the care, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries that occur. There is also the opportunity to travel with a sports team for a semester.

Sul Ross has modern athletic facilities and state-of-the-art equipment for the program. The main training room is located in the Pete P. Gallego Center, and there are satellite training rooms at Jackson Field and at Kokernot Field, our baseball facility.

Students in the program typically major in kinesiology and minor in a related field. Students are encouraged to complete their teaching certification in order to be more marketable.

The following courses are required by the state in order to sit for the licensure exam:

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Health Education
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Kinesiology
  • Basic First Aid/CPR
  • Athletic Training
  • Practicum in Athletic Training
