This course will focus upon using literature in the elementary,
junior high and secondary classroom to teach the skills necessary

A course which examines diagnostic features, the history,
organization and criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM IV), plus the prevalence

including basic pharmacology, conceptualizations or additions,

A course in the methods of assessment of mental health problems
presented in inpatient and outpatient settings. Includes current
methodology of counseling and treatment of such problems and

6344 Counseling in Multicultural Society
(3-0)
Designed to help the students develop knowledge, skills, and
attitudes needed to provide effective counseling in a multicultural
and pluralistic society. Issues addressed include awareness of
one's own worldview and that of others; racism, streotyping, and
discrimination; demographic community, and family charecteristics
of various minority groups; and the application of theory,
technique, and ethics to multicultural counseling. Prerequisite:
Approval of instructor.
6345 Family Therapy (3-0)
A course designed to study the techniques of counseling families,
including: identifying the changing roles of contemporary family
members; practice with a variety of theoretically consistent
interventions; appropriate response to families engaged in
alternative lifestyles. Prerequisite: ED 5314 and 7303.
6346 Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling

A course to familiarize students with ethical and legal practice in
the field of counseling; included are standards of ethical practice
and their application to the various areas of counseling, ethical
decision making, major ethical and legal issues, and ethical
responses to unethical behavior. Prerequisite: ED 5314

A course in the history, development and operation of career
technology education programs, including the impact and
implications of state and federal legislation and regulation.
6372 Information Resources for Career
Development (3-0)
A course designed to train counselors in the collection, evaluation
and the interpretation to data related to the labor market and
market trends. Emphasis is placed upon sources of information
(government, industry, professional) and the means by which such
information can be used by teachers, counselors, students and
parents.

Identification, Placement and Follow-Up (3-0)
A course designed to develop counselor competences in the
identification, placement and follo9w-up of students who may
participate in career and technology education programs. Emphasis
is placed on involvement at the appropriate grade levels as an
alternative or in addition to college preparation for career entry
and advancement.
7301 Clinical Practice in Counseling
(3-0)
Practical experiences in counseling which include supervised and
videotaped counseling experiences. Prerequisites: ED 5314, ED 7303
and ED 7315.

A professional orientation course covering program development,
organization, management and accountability; professional
organizations; codes of ethics; legal aspects of practice;
standards of preparation; position functions.
7303 Techniques of Counseling
(3-0)
A course in counseling practice which applies knowledge of
personality and human development to the processes of therapeutic
change and developmental guidance; emphasis on a variety of
counseling and guidance techniques, methods and ethics in
individual application and crisis intervention. Prerequisite ED
5314.
7304 Leadeship in Educational Administration
(3-0)
A critical examination of the theory and practice of leadership.
The behaviors, skills, attributes, believes and attitudes for
leadership will be researched and investigated. Special attention
will be given to the difference between the concept of leadership
and the concept of management in organizations. Prerequisite:
professional mid-management certificate or approval of
instructor.

superintendency; emphasis on decision-making modes and leadership
change strategies.
7308 The Superintendency (3-0)
This course examines the role of superintendent of the local school
district. Major emphasis will focus upon the role and relationship
required in a climate of restructuring and change for quality
education. Prerequisite: must have completed professional
mid-management administrator requirements.

A study of federal and state programs currently being used in
public schools.
7310 Public School Buildings

A study of past and present building architecture with a special
emphsis on building types.
7311:I and 7311:II Superintendent Internship
(0-3) and (0-3)
A course which provides the student with a minimum of 300 clock
hours of reality expereiences in the superintendency in a
TEA-accredited public, private or parochial school; students work
with a superintendent, assistant superintendent or business manager
in the conduction of everyday central office administrative duites.
Prerequisite: approval of advospr amd completion of the
mid-management certification program. Clock hours must be
accumulated during two consecutive semesters. 7311:I is required
for enrollment in 7311:II.
7312 Practicum in Reading (0-3)
A problems course which provides internship experiences for a
student seeking the reading specialist certificate. Prerequisite:
completion of a minimum of 15 of the 24 hours required for reading
specialist certification, including ED 5308, ED 6313 and ED
6314.
7313:I and 7313:II Administration Internship
(0-3) and (0-3)
A course which provides reality experiences in the principalship in
a TEA-accredited public, private or parochial school; students
spend a minimum of 300 clock hours working with a principal and/or
assistant principal in the conduction of everyday administrative
duties. Prerequisite: approval of advisor and completion of a
minimum of 24 semester hours of mid-management coursework. Clock
hours must be accumulated during two consecutive semesters. 7313:I
is required for enrollment in 7313:II.
7315 Group Processes in Guidance and
Counseling (3-0)
A course which develops competence in group processes used in
counseling and guidance through role-playing, audio-visual
techniques and group experiences as both a member and leader with
individuals of all age levels. Prerequisite: ED 5314 and 7303.
7316 Internship in Guidance and Counseling
(0-3)
A course which provides reality field experiences in counseling and
guidance in an appropriate school or agency setting; students spend
a minimum of 150 clock hours under supervision in the conduction of
counseling and guidance activities. May be taken twice, with
permission of advisor. Prerequisite: ED 5314, 7303, 7315, 7301 and
consent of advisor.
7318 Practicum in Special Education
(0-3)
A course which provides field experience in special education in a
TEA-accredited public, private or parochial school; students spend
a minimum of 90 clock hours under supervision of school and
university faculty. Prerequisite: completion of 24 hours of special
education coursework.
7319 Practicum in Gifted and Talented
(0-3)
A course which provides field experience in gifted and talented
education programs in a TEA-accredited public, private or parochial
school. Students spend a minimum of 100 clock hours under the
supervision of school and university faculty. Prerequisite:
completion of a minimum of 12 hours of gifted and talented
coursework and permission of the instructor.
7321 Superintendent/School Board Relations
(3-0)
Surveys the governance aspect of public education in Texas. Reviews
roles, responsibilities and functions of the superintendent and
board members.
7322 Superintendent Finance Issues
(3-0)
An in-depth analysis of the superintendent's role in developing a
comprehensive school district budget. All aspects of financing
public schools in Texas are reviewed.
