Academic Advising

The function of The Counseling and Advising Center (CAC) advisor is to provide academic information and assistance to both faculty and students to facilitate student success in their course work by designing and maintaining an effective, intrusive academic advising system for undecided majors and probationally admitted students and to assist with decision-making regarding the students' academic future.

Academic Advising

The advising staff is available to provide assistance in:

  • Scheduling courses for undeclared majors
  • Offering referral services for those with difficult questions
  • Managing the Early Warning System
  • Lifts TSI holds and maintains IDEP's for TSI compliance

Academic Suport Program

There are many resources available at Sul Ross State University for students who are on academic probation or probationally admitted to the University. An intrusive advising program through the Center is designed to help students utilize available resources and successfully achieve good academic standing. Good academic standing is a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or better.

How to get help from The Counseling and Advising Center (CAC):

  • Meet with an advisor, via appointment or walk in, to discuss your academic difficulties
  • Sign a contract indicating approval of the suggested method to be in good standing
  • Make a follow-up appointment to talk about your progress
  • Contact your advisor if there are questions and/or problems with your academic career

WITHDRAWAL FROM THE UNIVERSITY

Any enrolled student needing to withdraw from Sul Ross State University must meet with an advisor in the CAC before beginning the process. Students who wish to withdraw (drop) from all courses for which they are enrolled, even if they are enrolled in only one class, must complete a Student Withdrawal Form. Withdrawing or dropping one or more classes while keeping other courses is a different process initiated with the student 's advisor.

Students who withdraw are required to surrender their Student Identification Card and selected campus offices are notified of this action. Any refund due the student will not be processed until the Cashier's Office is notified that the withdrawal card has been completely processed.

Students who telephone and ask to be withdrawn from the University must provide sufficient information to confirm the identity of the caller as the student. The withdrawal is processed by The Counseling and Advising Center staff and they will notify appropriate offices of the action.

Note: Campus Post Office Boxes will be closed when the student withdraws unless the student makes special arrangements with the Post Office. Access to the computer labs and the right to check out books from the Library are lost upon withdrawal.
