Description
Sul Ross State University is a comprehensive regional university situated in the sparsely populated, culturally-rich Trans-Pecos region (known also as Big Bend country or as El Despoblado) of Texas. The only comprehensive public university in a vast 17-county area, Sul Ross is committed to ensuring that all peoples of the community are reached and supported, to providing a student-centered atmosphere, and, as a Hispanic-serving institution within this "crucible of cultures," to encouraging and assisting the success of those particular students.
The academic side of the university is divided into four basic units: the School of Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Professional Studies and Rio Grande College (headquartered in Uvalde). The primary functions of these administrative entities are to establish and maintain quality academic programs; assure student learning; encourage faculty development and training; retain and graduate students; promote professional, scholarly, and research activities; and support the overall mission of the university, "teaching, research and public service."
