Teacher Certification through the SRSU
Post-Baccalaureate Initial Certification Program

This program is designed for individuals who have a degree and wish to become certified teachers in Texas. The SRSU PBIC Program has been approved as an alternative route to teacher certification by the State Board for Educator Certification and meets the new No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements of "highly qualified teacher."
Candidates who possess a four-year baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with a major (or at least 24 hours/12 upper-division hours) in an area for which SRSU-Alpine has been approved, may apply for the SRSU alternative PBIC Program. The SRSU PBIC Program may be amended at any time to meet the needs of the program as is necessary to comply with state or federal law.
Applicants Must:
- Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university
- Be accepted to the SRSU Graduate Program as a post baccalaureate student seeking teacher certification (status will be non-degree/not seeking a degree) OR as a graduate student seeking a degree as Master of Education.
- Send official transcripts of ALL college/university work to the Admissions Office
Requirements for PBICP:
- Complete the SRSU PBICP application form and meet all requirements indicated
- Pay PBIC Program Fee ($30), which includes one deficiency plan; additional deficiency plans are $20 each. (No charge to SRSU graduates)
- Have a 4-year degree/major in teaching field for which you are seeking teacher certification or have at least 24 semester credit hours (12 hours of which are upper division) in the field for which you are seeking certification
- Have an overall/cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better on a 4.0 scale
- Have a GPA of 2.50 or better on a 4.0 scale in your major/teaching field
- Test requirements (one of the following):
- THEA scores of: Reading – 250+, Math – 230+, and Writing – 220/6+ OR
- ACT scores of: Reading - 23+, Writing 17+, Math 18+ and Composite 21+ OR
- SAT scores of: Reading 450+, Math 450+ and Composite 900+.
- If SAT scores are used, the THEA or ACT writing score or a grade of B or better in English 1301 or 1302 may be used to satisfy the writing component.
- Grade requirements in lieu of testing (grade B or better in the following):
- Reading: English 2301 or any sophomore or advanced literature course
- Writing: English 1301 or 1302
- Math: Math 1310, 1315, 1316, 1342 or 2413
- Oral Communications: COMM 1303 or Theatre 2304
- Have a grade of C or better in the following: 3 sch Computer Science; 3 sch Speech; 12 sch English
- Satisfactory report of criminal background inquiry
- Enroll in the Post-Baccalaureate Block courses for the PBIC Program as indicated on your deficiency plan. NOTE: Students seeking financial aid must provide a copy of the deficiency plan to the Financial Aid Office (Rowena Gallego, Director, 432-837-8059)
- Obtain employment with one of the SRSU Teacher Center/Partnership School districts and provide verification of hire as a teacher of record for the Internship requirements.
- Have daily access to the Internet and e-mail.

Block Courses for Post-Baccalaureate Students:
Students must apply to SRSU Graduate Admissions as a post baccalaureate student seeking teacher certification (status will be non-degree/not seeking a degree) OR as a graduate student seeking a degree as Master of Education. Students in the PBIC Program must enroll in the Professional Development Block coursework in the Education Department at Sul Ross State University – Alpine. Contact the Certification Specialist for more information (432) 837-8199.
NOTE: TEACHER EDUCATION STUDENTS MUST MAINTAIN DAILY ACCESS TO THE INTERNET AND EMAIL TO MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH PROFESSORS, MENTORS AND SUPERVISORS.

- +ED 5300 Internship in Teaching I (Internship I as Teacher of Record on a Probationary Certificate)
- +ED 5301 Internship in Teaching II, prerequisite: ED 5300 (Internship II as Teacher of Record on a Probationary Certificate)
+ Students must have been fully admitted to the PBIC Program to enroll in coursework. Registration for these classes is restricted to approved, fully admitted students.
*Students must complete at least 9 of the required 18 sch education coursework to be eligible for the Internship/Probationary Certificate.
