SRSU Orientation

To ensure the transition into a new college environment goes as smoothly as possible, Sul Ross State University conducts orientation sessions. During these events students will meet faculty, staff and new classmates; become better acquainted with the campus; find out about student activities; learn more about university policies and procedures; get answers to questions about university life; and register for classes.

All new and transfer students must attend a session. Students who do not register will automatically be enrolled in the orientation class, COMM 1101, which meets at 8 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Testing Prior to Orientation

The state of Texas requires a basic skills (reading, writing, and math) assessment of all students enrolling in public higher education. Students who have not taken the THEA/COMPASS or a state-approved alternative tests for Texas State Initiative compliance must do so prior to attending orientation. Check with local community colleges/universities for tests offered and test dates.

Official test scores must be on file with the registrar in order to do proper academic advising during the orientation session. Students should contact the registrar at (432) 837-8713 to verify that scores are on file.

To test at Sul Ross, call the Office of Career Services and Testing at (432) 837-8178 or (432) 837-8357 to register for the COMPASS. Students who call to register for the test should leave their name and number and indicate that they want to register for COMPASS. The cost of the test is $65.

Students may check with local testing centers at community colleges or universities to take any of the TSI tests prior to attending orientation. Fees will vary at all testing centers.
