Lobo CampNew Student OrientationAll new students attending Sul Ross State University must attend an orientation session. Fall '08 Orientation
You must be admitted to Sul Ross State University before registering for orientation. Please call the Registrar's Office at (432) 837-8713 for any questions regarding your admissions file. To ensure that your transition into your new college environment goes as smoothly as possible, the university conducts new student orientation sessions. During these sessions you'll be able to:
Testing Prior to OrientationThe State of Texas requires a basic skills (reading, writing, and math) assessment of all students enrolling in public higher education. Students who have not taken the THEA/COMPASS or a state-approved alternative tests for Texas State Initiative (TSI) compliance must do so prior to attending orientation. Once again, you may check with local community colleges/universities for tests offered and test dates. Official test scores must be on file with the Registrars Office in order to do proper academic advising during the orientation session. Please contact the Registrars Office at (432) 837-8713 to verify your scores are on file. To test at Sul Ross, call the Office of Career Services and Testing at (432) 837-8178 or (432) 837-8357 to register for the COMPASS. When you call to register for the test, leave your name and number and that you want to register for COMPASS. The cost of the test is $65. Students may check with your local testing centers at community colleges or universities to take any of the TSI tests prior to attending orientation. Fees will vary at all testing centers. How to RegisterAn orientation registration form will be mailed out only to prospective students that have been accepted to Sul Ross. There are several ways to register:
Students can pay for orientation either with a check or money order mailed along with the completed registration form or by using Visa or MasterCard. Registration Deadline Your registration must be recieved by 5 p.m. January 9, so please mail in registration within the appropriate time. If we do not recieve your registration, you will automatically be enrolled in our orientation class, COMM 1101, which meets at 8 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Canceling RegistrationTo cancel your reservation, contact the Office of Recruiting and Admissions no less than 10 days before your assigned session. Cancellation refunds, less a $25 processing fee, will be mailed about four to six weeks after cancellation. Staying the night for OrientationAll students that stay for overnight on-campus guest housing will need to bring sheets, pillows, towels, soap, personal necessities, alarm clock, etc. For any questions about on-campus housing, contact the Office of Residential Living at (432) 837-8190 Special AccommodationsFamilies Attending OrientationParents and family members who accompany new students to orientation are welcome to attend but should make their own arrangements for lodging. Information on special sessions for parents will be included in confirmation mailouts to prospective freshmen. For information on Alpine accommodations, visit www.alpinetexas.com.
