Become a Lobo!

In all, coach Greg Wright’s Lobos dropped seven games by a total of 21 points in 2007-08 in a season of “what ifs?”

Sul Ross ended the year 8-17, 7-14 in American Southwest Conference play. A five-game losing skid to end the year included a one-point setback to eventual conference tournament runner-up Concordia University; a three-point loss to Texas Lutheran on a buzzer-beating shot; a five-point loss to Schreiner University; and a three-point edging by McMurry.

Earlier in the year, the Lobos dropped a five-point verdict to Hardin-Simmons, were edged by three points at Incarnate Word and fell 49-48 to the University of Texas-Tyler.

“Close calls can be hard to swallow but we proved we could be competitive for a full 40 minutes,” Wright said. “We also won some close games on the opponents’ floor and I am confident that 2007-08 will be a springboard for the future.”

Just two seniors, Art Gonzalez (El Paso, Eastwood) and forward Jermaine Packer (Midland, Lee) graduated from last year’s squad so the Lobos will return plenty of experienced talent. Gonzalez, an All-ASC Honorable Mention selection, led the team in scoring averaging 12.8 points per game. He posted 74 season assists, 29 steals and shot 41 percent from three-point range and 84 percent from the foul line. Packer averaged 7.2 points per game and 4.4 rebounds.

“Art was with the program for four years and made many valuable contributions,” said Wright. “He gave us solid outside scoring, steady defense and good floor leadership. Jermaine was a consistent presence on the boards and gave us steady minutes.”

Roderick Gunter (Houston, Westside), the ASC West Division Freshman of the Year, and Fili Torres (Clint), an All-ASC Second Team and All-Defensive Team selection, lead a host of returnees.

Gunter was a scoring machine during the second half of the season and finished the year with an average of 11.7 points per contest including three straight games of 24 to 30 points. Torres averaged 12 points per game and led the team in rebounding with 7.6 boards per game, adding 31 blocked shots and 44 percent accuracy from three-point range.

Junior forward Abe Ely (El Paso, Hanks) averaged 10.7 points through 12 games before missing the remainder of the season with an injury. Moises Morales (Ft. Hancock) provided clutch scoring in several games including a career-high of 25 points in a win at Hardin-Simmons. He averaged 7 points per game.

Other returnees include Ricky Aguilar (El Paso, Franklin, 4.9 ppg., 37 assists, 19 steals); Anthony Miller (Amarillo, 2.8 ppg., 55 assists, 18 steals); Jimmy Martinez (El Paso, Andress, 2.0 ppg.) and forwards Henry Flores (San Antonio, Stevens, 5.4 ppg., 3.9 rpg.) and Karl Barnes (Houston, Elsik).
“Nine players averaged at least 16 minutes per game last season and that court experience gives us a good foundation for 2008-09,” Wright said.
