Become a Lobo!
The 2009 Sul Ross track and field team looks to return some seasoned veterans. Dondre Carter and Larry Lovato should see action in long and short distant running events.
Josh Popham will return as one of the team leaders in the shot and discus.
Sul Ross will miss the services of two-time top conference javelin thrower Austin Davidson. Davidson posted a first place finish with a throw of 55.93 meters in the javelin at 2008’s ASC Track and Field Championships hosted by McMurry University.
His toss marked the second consecutive conference meet where Davidson was the top javelin finisher after 2007’s 57.80 meter throw at the ASC meet at Mississippi College. Last year's finish also earned Davidson ASC All-Conference recognition.
Other competitors at 2008’s conference meet included Zach Gideon. Gideon placed third in the hammer (41.32), shot put (12.63) and discuss (39.66). Gideon finished with 18 points, good for a team high and qualified as an American Southwest Conference All-Conference selection.
Cruz Tovar placed fourth in the javelin at 46.36 meters while Jacob Warden and Ben Aherns finished eighth and ninth respectively.
Josh Popham finished a seed behind Gideon in the hammer throw with a toss of 33.88 meters and fourth in the discuss at 34.63. Popham took eighth in the shot put.
In running events, Larry Lovato finished fourth out of nine competitors in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:47.95. Lovato also placed fourth in the steeple chase. Cruz Tovar finished ninth in the 400 meter dash while Cruz Tovar placed seventh in the 200 meter.
