2009 Season Stats
ALPINE, Texas – Mississippi College’s Adam Shaffer completed 19 of 29 passes for 363 yards and five touchdowns as the visiting Choctaws rolled past Sul Ross, 49-27 on Saturday.
Saturday’s loss against Mississippi College marks the third straight homecoming setback for the Lobos. Sully’s last homecoming victory came in 2006 in a 34-15 upending of McMurry University.
Lobo senior Laurence Smith netted 108 yards off of nine carries in Saturday’s effort. Freshman signal caller Reggie Collins posted a season best 169 yards through the air. He completed eight of 18 tosses with three scoring strikes but suffered a pair of sacks.
Roderick Jefferson was the main target with three grabs for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Tony Allen led the defense with 14 tackles, ten of those solo. He recorded a forced fumble recovery and a sack for a loss of eight yards in the effort.
The Choctaws lit the board first as Austin Divinity returned the opening kickoff 88 yards into the Sul Ross end zone. Brannon Walls’ extra point kick was good giving Mississippi College a 7-0 lead just 12 seconds in the contest.
Shaffer began work on the visitor’s next offensive series connecting with Brent Thompson on a 24-yard scoring pass. Walls tacked on the extra point to give the Choctaws a 14-0 with 12:07 remaining in the first quarter.
The Lobo punt team gave up its first of two safeties as Michael Van Wagner chased a bad snap into his own end zone which gave Mississippi College a 16-0 advantage at the 9:59 mark, first period.
The Choctaws then went with their special teams as Walls drilled a 20-yard field goal to lift MC to a 19-0 lead with just over three minutes left in the opening quarter.
In the second period, Shaffer hit Wesley Boudreau from ten yards out finishing a six-play, 66-yard drive. Walls converted the extra point and gave the visitors a commanding 26-0 favor with 8:13 left before the half.
Van Wagner chased another bad snap into the home team’s end zone as MC nailed two more points on the board to lead 28-0 at 7:09.
Shaffer then found Palmer Askew and Steven Knight from eight and 33 yards out. Both extra point kicks by Walls were good as Mississippi College soared to a 42-0 lead with just under two minutes remaining before the break.
The Lobos found some redemption with 25 seconds left in the half as Collins hit Jefferson on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Van Wagner’s extra point kick was good with Sully trailing 42-7 heading to intermission.
After a silent third quarter, Collins scampered two yards early in the fourth, capping a 12-play, 72-yard march. The Van Wagner kick was good as Sully pulled to within 28 trailing 42-14 with 12:02 left in the game.
Laurence Smith’s 89-yard run set up a one-yard trot for Collins at 9:31. Van Wagner nailed the extra point with Sul Ross down 42-21.
Shaffer added some insurance at 3:10 on an eight-yard pass to Askew. The Walls kick was good and lifted the Choctaws to a 49-21 lead.
The Lobos put up the final score for either team with 40 seconds remaining as Collins rushed two yards into the MC end zone. Another bad snap cost Sully and extra point as the Choctaws went on the claim the 49-27 victory.
Sul Ross drops to 2-7 on the season and 2-5 in ASC play. Mississippi College improves to 7-2 and 6-1.
The Lobos will close out the 2009 slate next week in Belton against nationally-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor.
