Starting a Personal Web Site (Alpine Students)

Getting Started

Students at Sul Ross State University may post web pages to lyra.sulross.edu by using their Lyra accounts. This access is made available as an educational tool, allowing students to learn more about creating web pages and to post assignments as required by faculty members. These web pages may be viewed or updated only from within the Sul Ross network; they will not be accessible from off campus.

Posting web pages requires no advance setup. Any student who can log into Lyra may post files.

Follow the instructions below to access Lyra and create your site. After you have posted your web pages you will be able to view them from within the SRSU network at http://lyra.sulross.edu/~username, where the username is your Lyra login name.

Creating Web Pages

The instructions below on how to post web pages to Lyra assume that you have already created your web pages and have your files ready to post. If you are taking a web design or related class, this information should be covered by your instructor. If you want to create web pages, see other resources on web sites in the SRSU Knowledge Center.

Posting Pages from a Lab Computer

If you are using a lab computer, you should already be logged into Lyra. Follow the steps below to create a web site:

  1. Open My Computer
  2. Open your Z drive
  3. If you don't have one yet, create a folder called public_html
  4. Put your web files in the public_html folder
  5. Make sure that your web site's home page is named index.html

Posting Pages from Another SRSU Computer

If you are using another computer in the university network, you will need to log into Lyra before starting:

  1. Open My Computer
  2. In the address bar, delete My Computer and enter \\lyra\username where username is your login name
  3. When prompted, enter your login and password for Lyra
  4. Create a folder called public_html
  5. Put your web files in the public_html folder
  6. Make sure that your web site's home page is named index.html

Space Limits on Lyra

Each student has 100 MB of space in his or her Lyra directory. This limit is for all files combined, including everything in the public_html folder plus any other documents, images or other types of files stored in the directory.

Web Site Content

Appropriate content for personal web sites includes class assignments and research, personal information, family and hobbies or interests.

Content that should not be used includes any material that would be considered illegal, content that violates state or university policy and pages for commercial activities. Other students' information, including grades or any personal identification information such as Social Security or campus ID numbers, must never be posted to the web. Violators may be subject to disciplinary action.

Policies and Guidelines

While the Web Publishing Guidelines in the Administrative Policy Manual do not specifically address student web sites, the information pertaining to personal web sites in the policy is applicable to student as well as employee sites. Other relevant university and OIT policies include the:

  • Acceptable Use Policy
  • Accessibility Policy
  • Intellectual Property Rights Policy
  • Links Policy
  • Privacy and Security Policy

Links to IT policies may be found from the OIT home page.

Technical Assistance

Students who have trouble logging into Lyra or posting their pages may call the OIT Help Desk at ext. 8765 (or toll-free at 1-888-691-5071). The SRSU webmaster does not support Lyra.
