Alumni Association President's Message

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,

I am honored and excited to again serve you as President of the Sul Ross State University Alumni Association for the 2010-2011 term. The Alumni Board with our new members continue to work for the betterment of Sul Ross State University. The new University President, Dr. Ricardo Maestas has hid the ground running and has not slowed down at bit. His concern for the future of Sul Ross has been demonstrated in a number of methods, however the most important has been to increase student enrollment while working under some severe budget constraints of the State of Texas. I know his goal is that Sul Ross State University will become the “Best in the West”.

The Alumni Association is committed to recognizing and nurturing the rich and proud heritage of Sul Ross State University, the Alumni, the faculty and staff, the current and future student bodies of our main campus in Alpine as well as the Rio Grande branch campuses through the development of mutually beneficial relationships. It should be the function of the Association to develop ways and means to involve and communicate with the Alumni and to see that the Alumni are recognized as a respected and integral part of the University community.

With that charge, we will continue to focus much of our future effort on Alumni growth, improvement of communication with our stakeholders and expanding our affinity partnerships. Alumni growth not only means growing our active membership but developing more Alumni Chapters across Texas. Chapter growth will enhance Alumni friendships, aid in student recruitment, develop scholarship programs and deepen our proud heritage. I am pleased to report that the South Texas Alumni and Friends Chapter are doing a great job in this area. The ANRS and Rodeo Exes Association are to be commended for their continued outstanding accomplishments in scholarship development while the Sul Ross Baby Boomer group continues to be a very strong voice and advocacy for the betterment of “Sully”.

The Alumni Association Board has updated the Association By-laws, continues to review it membership numbers and structure, updated our SRSUAA Chapter Handbook, and have enhanced our member benefit package. I am proud to be associated with a Board that is committed to the ultimate goal for the success of Sul Ross State University.

Sul Ross State University would not be what is today without the support of its talented and diverse Alumni population. I became involved with the Association because I was grateful to SRSU for providing me a foundation to reach many of my personal growth, career, and professional goals. I feel a deep sense of obligation to repay my debt of gratitude to SRSU for helping me reach these goals. I am sure many of you feel the same way; if not please stop and reflect on your personal life.

Together we can influence the future of our Alma Mater, build a legacy that will maintain the name of the University, honor our pride in the Bar SR Bar brand that is on the hill that overlooks our University and that is on the rings that we wear, while strengthening the reputation of SRSU, and increasing the value of our degrees.

PLEASE HELP US, HELP YOU!
Sincerely,
Don Sugarek
