The McNair Project

McNair TRIO LogoThe Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program assists low-income, first-generation and under-represented students with the academic skills needed to succeed in earning a doctoral degree.

Named after the first African-American astronaut, the McNair Project will serve 25 Sul Ross juniors and seniors who desire to go onto graduate school and obtain terminal degrees such as doctor of philosophy, doctor of education, medical and law degrees.

Services

The McNair Project, a federal TRIO program, will provide numerous services to students, including:

  • Personalized research opportunities
  • Graduate school preparation and selection
  • Test preparation for entry exams such as GRE, MCAT and LSAT
  • Sponsored trips
  • Symposiums, graduate fairs

Summer Research Institute

Students selected for the program will be matched with a faculty mentor and will have the opportunity to attend a Summer Research Institute, completing a focused and individualized research project tailored to their specific areas of study. The program will provide free room and board, tuition and fees for three semester hours and a stipend of $2,000 to participating McNair Scholars.

Eligibility and Applications

Eligible applicants for the program must:

  • Be first-generation, low-income, under-represented or a veteran
  • Plan to go into a doctoral program
  • Be a junior or senior
  • Not yet have a bachelor's degree
  • Have earned at least 60 credit hours by May 15, 2008
