Robert and I met for the very first time on Saturday, September 17, 1966 at a dance which was held at the Centennial School gymnasium. Dr. Albelardo Baeza and I were leading the grand march for a 16 de septiembre coronation. Robert asked me to dance and from that night we starting dating. Robert had enrolled at SRSU during the summer sessions and was a work study employee at SRSU. He had transferred from Uvalde Jr. College. I was not attending Sul Ross at that particular time as I had a career as a Cosmetologist and had my own business. However, I did enroll and became a part time student. We took several classed together and after two years of dating we married . After that he became a full time student so he could finish sooner and I dropped out of school and worked full time to help him through school. Robert obtained his degree in 1970 and signed a contract to teach in San Antonio.
When Robert returned and had served his term of duty in the Army he applied for a teaching position here in Alpine and was hired. He taught 5th grade for 7 years and then taught Physical Education at the elementary level for 22 years. In 1974, Robert earned his Master’s degree in Education. He worked for the AISD for 29 years until he retired in 2001. After Robert was hired it was his turn to put me thru school and I enrolled at SRSU as a married woman with 2 children. I would work part time and take as many classes I could. I reached my goal and got my Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and earned my Master’s of Education degree in 1983. I was hired by the AISD in 1976 and taught 3rd grade for 17 years. In 1992 there was a position open at AHS for Spanish teacher and I transferred and taught there for 8 years until my retirement in 2000. I am proud to say that both my daughter and son are graduates of Sul Ross State University and my first grand daughter is making plans to enroll at SRSU this coming summer session 2008. Robert continues to work with Sul Ross University during the summer with the driver education program. Robert and I have many fond memories of Sul Ross and are very grateful for all the wonderful opportunities it has given my family. Robert and I will be celebrating our 40th anniversary this coming summer! I was visiting with a guy (don't remember his name) in the West parking lot in the fall of 1987 one day. I saw this girl walking from the library with red hair and a tan. I asked the guy I was visiting with, who that girl was and he said he knew her and would introduce us. The guy waved her over to us and introduced me to Donnee Chance and that is where legacy began. We met through mutual friends at their house over the Memorial day weekend. Two weeks later we went on a camping trip with these same friends and by the end of the summer we moved in with each other. A year later we got married and then nine months after that we had our first child. After I graduated with my Masters degree in 2005 David got a job with Customs and Border Protection in Atlanta, GA as an Ag specialist. We lived there for almost two years and while there we had our second child. We were lucky enough to get a transfer back to Texas, closer to family. Our Wedding Date: 10-20-01 |
