SAFETY REMINDER:

December 9, 2011

Sul Ross State University and the University Department of Public Safety encourage everyone to use good judgement and be an active player in your own safety and remember:

*Be aware of your surroundings at all times

*Remember that alcohol begins to impair your judgement with the first drink

Should you or a friend experience a rape or sexual assault:

1.   Get to a safe place

2.   Tell someone you trust

3.   Preserve all physical evidence

4.   Obtain medical treatment

5.   Report the assault to police

As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, all area fires are contained or partially contained. All highways, with the exception of Highway 17 between Fort Davis and Balmorhea, are open. Smoke visible from the south is due to a massive fire in Mexico, roughly 50 miles from Big Bend National Park. For updates, as they are given, go to the KVLF-KALP Radio website, bigbendradio.com, during the station’s three major newscasts. Or tune in live to KALP-FM 92.7 or KVLF AM

Fires continue to burn east of Alpine (East Hwy 90/US 67) towards the Fort Stockton area and north of Alpine (South Hwy 118) towards the Fort Davis area.  Please take safety precautions when in these areas.  Law enforcement and fire authorities continue to monitor the situation.  Please tune in to AM radio station KVLF Kalp 1240 and the local television news station.  Access to KVLF 1240 AM can also be obtained online at www.bigbendradio.com

Be advised that SR Dept of Public Safety has been notified that the gas company will be evaluating a possible gas leak on E Ave B between Entrance #4 and Bird Street. The gas company will be using heavy equipment to dig down to the potential problem, and the roadway will be blocked off until they are through.  UDPS will keep you apprised of any noteworthy developments.  Should you need to report anything related this situation or have additional questions please call extension 8011.

Be advised that the pass on I-90 between Alpine and Marfa, and the pass on HWY 118 North between Alpine and Ft. Davis have been reported to have icy conditions.  These conditions are causing travel delays.  Please use caution when traveling these roadways, and travel only when absolutely necessary. 


Tornado Season Tornado Facts:

  • Peak tornado season in the South is March through May; in the North, is late spring through early summer.
  • Look for the following danger signs: Dark greenish sky, hail, low-lying clouds, or loud roar.
  • A tornado may strike quickly, with little warning. Winds may also die down and then pick up again.
  • A tornado may appear nearly transparent until dust and debris are picked up or a cloud forms in the funnel.
  • A water spot is a tornado that forms over water.
  • A tornado WATCH is to prepare people for a possible threat, while a tornado WARNING is when a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar and is imminent. What to do:
  • Be prepared to take shelter immediately when storms are approaching.
  • Never stay in a vehicle or chase the storm.
  • If you are outside and no shelter is available, take cover on low protected ground, such as a ditch.
  • In a house, dorm, or apartment: Immediately take cover in a small room, such as a bathroom or closet. Stay away from windows. Crouch down and cover your head.
  • In a building: Go directly to an enclosed, windowless area in the lowest center of the building away from glass. Crouch down and cover your head.

On Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at approximately 5:26 p.m., it was reported to the University Department of Public Safety (UDPS) that two rattlesnakes were observed near the playground area of Lobo Village #7. If a rattlesnake is observed on or near the University campus, please provide the location, description and time of observance to UDPS at 837-8100. Seek medical attention immediately if bitten. Students may also notify the Residential Living Department at 837-8190 f they observe any rattlesnakes in the area. Please take any necessary safety precautions if you come into contact with any type of snake.


On Wednesday, April 2, 2008 it was reported to the University Department of Public Safety that a mountain lion (cougar) had been sighted the night before at approximately 9:00pm on the hill area above the Mountainside Dorm. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has been notified. Please call 837-8100 if you observe a mountain lion on or near the university campus and provide the location, description, and time of sighting to UDPS. Students my also want to notify Residential Living at 837-8190 in the event of a sighting. Please use precaution by staying alert to your surroundings.
