Safety Alerts

Tornado Season TornadoFacts:

  • Peak tornado season in the South is March through May; in the North, is late spring through early summer.
  • Look for the following danger signs: Dark greenish sky, hail, low-lying clouds, or loud roar.
  • A tornado may strike quickly, with little warning. Winds may also die down and then pick up again.
  • A tornado may appear nearly transparent until dust and debris are picked up or a cloud forms in the funnel.
  • A waterspot is a tornado that forms over water.
  • A tornado WATCH is to prepare people for a possible threat, while a tornado WARNING is when a tornadohas been spottedorindicated by radar and is imminent. What to do:
  • Be prepared to take shelter immediately when storms are approaching.
  • Never stay in a vehicle or chase the storm.
  • If you are outside and no shelter is available, take cover on low protected ground, such as a ditch.
  • In a house, dorm, or apartment: Immediately take cover in a small room, such as a bathroom or closet. Stay away from windows. Crouch down and cover your head.
  • In a building: Go directly to an enclosed, windowless area in the lowest center of the building away from glass. Crouch down and cover your head.

On Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at approximately 5:26 p.m., it was reported to the University Department of Public Safety (UDPS) that two rattlesnakes were observed near the playground area of Lobo Village #7. If a rattlesnake is observed on or near the University campus, please provide the location, description and time of observance to UDPS at 837-8100. Seek medical attention immediately if bitten. Students may also notify the Residential Living Department iat 837-8190 f they observe any rattlesnakes in the area. Please take any necessary safety precautions if you come into contact with any type of snake.


On Wednesday, April 2, 2008 it was reported to the University Department of Public Safety that a mountain lion (cougar) had been sighted the night before at approximately 9:00pm on the hill area above the Mountainside Dorm. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has been notified. Please call 837-8100 if you observe a mountain lion on or near the university campus and provide the location, description, and time ofsighting to UDPS. Students my also want to notify Residential Living at 837-8190 in the event of a sighting. Please use precautionby stayingalertto your surroundings.
