Transfer Information for Undergraduates

Sul Ross State University's accredited Criminal Justice program is designed to give the student a well-rounded education in the field. A large number of elective classes are available which allow students to pursue their particular interests.

Transfer students should be aware that the Sul Ross State University Department of Criminal Justice will accept all common Criminal Justice (CRIJ) courses for which the student has earned a C or better. Students who are licensed peace officers or other public-safety personnel may be able to receive credit for their academy course work. A case-by-case evaluation will determine eligibility. Cedit cannot be awarded for in-service or continuing education hours.

By law, the following set of courses are fully transferable and applicable lower-division courses:

• CRIJ 1301 Introduction to Criminal Justice
• CRIJ 1306 Court Systems & Practices
• CRIJ 1310 Fundamentals of Criminal Law
• CRIJ 2313 Correctional Systems & Practices
• CRIJ 2328 Police Systems & Practices

Other courses may be transferable. The student's transcript will be reviewed by the Criminal Justice Transfer Advisor, Dr. Lorie Rubenser, after the student is accepted to Sul Ross State University and their transcript(s) has been received. Students who anticipate transferring to Sul Ross may use the sample degree plan to plan future coursework.

No student will be allowed to substitute any transfer course for CJ 4309, Senior Seminar.

How to Start the Transfer Process

1. Go online to www.applytexas.org and fill out an online application for SRSU. The application fee is $25. Be sure to list all colleges and universities previously attended, regardless of GPA, to ensure credit is received for the maximum hours possible.

2. Official transcripts from each school attended must be sent directly to the Office of the Registrar at Sul Ross State University from the registrar of the issuing institution.

3. A maximum of 66 hours may be transferred from an accredited two-year college. Courses taken at a two-year college cannot transfer as advanced hours. Semester credit hours earned with the grade of D in non-remedial/non Criminal Justice courses at other institutions will transfer. Criminal Justice courses with a grade of D may transfer as general electives.

Credit for Military Services and Service School Courses

Military veterans may be eligible to receive credit for military service/service school courses. Veterans may also be eligible for GI Bill, Hazelwood benefits or other benefits to assist with tuition payments.
