Presidential Search

Sul Ross State University, a member of the Texas State University System, is beginning a search for a new President. The University invites applications and nominations from experienced and highly qualified leaders who are committed to providing excellent undergraduate and graduate programs for students in Far West Texas. The new President will assume this leadership position in September, 2014.

As a coeducational, comprehensive, public institution of higher education with an enrollment of nearly 3000 students, Sul Ross State University offers certificate, associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs. The main campus, in Alpine, Texas is situated in the unique environment of the Big Bend region and is the primary institution of higher education serving a 19-county area in West Texas. In order to serve the middle Rio Grande region, a key component in the University is The Rio Grande College which offers junior, senior and graduate work in selected programs in Uvalde, Del Rio and Eagle Pass.

The President of Sul Ross State University has broad responsibilities for the leadership and management of the University and its resources, and guides the University in developing its mission, goals and strategic plans. The President oversees the recruitment, promotion and retention of all faculty and staff. The President reports to the Chancellor of the Texas State University System, which is composed of eight different campuses across Texas and is the oldest and third largest system in Texas.
Sul Ross State University seeks a President who has deep respect for the University’s mission and goals and who appreciates the University’s important social and economic role in the region and state. The President will have a terminal degree and be a recognized leader with a record of success in accomplishing challenging goals. The President will have unquestioned integrity, a good sense of humor, a passion for educating students, and a record of building and maintaining an atmosphere of transparency and collegiality. The President will possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills combined with a creative, entrepreneurial spirit, and strong business acumen. The President will have extensive budgeting and management experience and a history of commitment to diversity. Finally, the President will be able to develop and implement a shared vision for Sul Ross’s future that is ambitious and achievable.
