Kokernot Outdoor Theatre • Alpine, Texas
Outdoor theatre has been a part of the Sul Ross experience since the inauguration of the Kokernot Amphitheatre in 1934. This theatre was used until the current outdoor theatre was built in 1970.
Although the first theatrical production at Sul Ross took place in 1921, the Theatre of the Big Bend was not formed until 1965 under the chairmanship of E. Clayton McCarty.
Its mission was"to provide entertainment and the cultural advantages of good theatre to the isolated ranch country of the Big Bend."Despite
predictions that such a venture would not succeed, 174 shows for a total of 1,048 performances have been presented over the past forty-two
years.
The Theatre of the Big Bend's presentations include musicals, comedies, dramas, classical works, children's plays, melodramas and radio dramas.
