As a young artist, my mother let me paint the murals on our living room walls. Today I paint and draw on pottery that I create. Integrating ceramic form with images from life and art has been the primary focus of my work for over 25 years. To begin, I shape the clay on the potter’s wheel, sometimes joining pieces to make the final form. When the clay has hardened, I draw deeply into the clay using ideas from life…from stories and events…and from ART.
My work has evolved out of a lifetime of ART-doing, ART-looking and ART-teaching.
I constantly experiment with pottery form, imagery for drawing, and color combinations. For color I use underglazes, ceramic stains and glazes in a variety of combinations and mixtures and use fired test tiles as guides in deciding color schemes. For some work I carve through dark slip to reveal the contrasting white clay underneath. In the multicolored works, I allow the warm hues of the natural clay to play an important role in the final color outcome.
I love all aspects of ceramics. This is an art medium that offers so much challenge and inspiration and allows me to blend all aspects of art together. Each completed piece leads to the next idea and next and the next. My work has evolved out of a lifetime of ART-doing, ART-looking and ART-teaching.
