Enrique Avalos not only counts his blessings, his uses them to benefit others.

The soft-spoken father of the late Esmeralda Rosalia Avalos said, "We are blessed that we have a lot of friends and people who help." He is speaking of the efforts of friends and family who have helped raise funds for two scholarships in memory of his daughter.

The first Sul Ross Rio Grande College scholarship in Esmi's name was given to a teacher education student for the 2014 spring semester. Now, the family and friends have increased their fundraising efforts and added another scholarship, this one to benefit a student admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing completion program that begins this fall.

Mr. Avalos, a Uvalde native, said that his daughter was always helping others despite her own health problems, and in that spirit, they wanted to reward students who dedicate their professional lives to serving others.

The first nursing scholarship and the second teacher education scholarship will be awarded to students for the fall 2014 semester.

Thanks to the generosity of the Avalos family and their friends, Esmi's dream of becoming a teacher and her selfless service to others will live on to benefit Rio Grande College students.
