Del Rio, TexasFor the third time in just over one year, Sul Ross Rio Grande College awarded scholarships on behalf of the Consulate of Mexico in Del Rio and held a ceremony on the RGC campus to recognize the recipients.

Consul Ricardo Santana and Sul Ross State University President Bill Kibler congratulated the six students who received $1,000 for the 2015 academic year. The scholarships were given to Mexican nationals living in Val Verde County and attending Rio Grande College. Those who benefited include Merary Alcantara, Azayra Campos de Cardenas, Esmeralda Crespo, Ana Hernandez, Melissa Sandoval, and Gabriela Velazco. The remaining amount will be awarded for the summer sessions.

The Government of the United Mexican States provided the funds through its Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The IME Becas funds improve accessibility to higher education programs for Mexicans living in other countries and the resources also promote higher education so their citizens may contribute to the enrichment of the host country. The first RGC IME scholarship was given in January of 2014 and since then, the assistance has benefited more than 10 additional students.

The scholarships support students who receive no other financial aid and helps them complete a degree in a timely manner. Azayra Campos said, “I plan to work as a bilingual Kindergarten teacher at one of the local schools and this gift will help me pay for my summer classes.” Merary Alcantara added, “I hope to be an elementary school teacher, and further in the future, I would like to travel to other countries and perhaps teach English classes. This scholarship will help me buy books for the summer classes.”
